The upcoming Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 promises to be one of the most exciting tournaments in women’s cricket history. For the first time, 12 teams will compete in the event, making the competition bigger and more unpredictable than ever before.

While teams like Australia, England, and India remain the favorites, many fans are also excited about the underdog women cricket teams that could surprise everyone during the tournament.

English conditions are expected to make the competition even closer. The pitches may help both batters and bowlers, giving smaller teams a better chance to challenge stronger sides.

Among all the underdogs, Sri Lanka appears to be the team most capable of creating major upsets.

Sri Lanka Could Become the Tournament’s Biggest Surprise

Sri Lanka has quietly become a very dangerous T20 side over the last few years. Earlier, the team depended heavily on captain Chamari Athapaththu, but things have started changing recently.

Young players are now supporting the senior stars much better, which has made the team stronger overall.

Chamari Athapaththu remains Sri Lanka’s biggest match winner. On her day, she can destroy any bowling attack in the world with her fearless batting and powerful hitting.

That ability alone makes Sri Lanka one of the most dangerous Women’s T20 World Cup teams outside the traditional favorites.

Sri Lanka’s Bowling Attack Could Be Very Important

Another major reason behind Sri Lanka’s rise is their disciplined bowling attack.

Their spinners have improved greatly and know how to control scoring during the middle overs. In English conditions, smart bowling and patience often become very important.

Sri Lanka’s bowlers may not have huge speed, but they understand how to build pressure on batters. That could help them trouble teams like New Zealand and West Indies in crucial group matches.

If Sri Lanka manages to qualify for the semifinals, they could become extremely difficult to stop.

Netherlands Could Become the Biggest Wildcard

The Netherlands is another team that many fans are curious about. The side will play its first ever senior Women’s T20 World Cup after qualifying through the Global Qualifier.

Unlike bigger teams, the Dutch side enters the tournament with very little pressure.

That freedom could actually become their biggest strength.

Most top teams have limited information about Netherlands players and tactics. In a short tournament, that surprise factor can become very useful.

The Dutch players are also familiar with European weather conditions, which may help them adjust quickly in England.

Other Teams Could Also Surprise Fans

Bangladesh, Ireland, and Scotland are other underdog women cricket teams that could create problems for stronger sides.

Bangladesh has a solid spin attack that can slow down batting lineups. Ireland has several young players who are improving rapidly, while Scotland will be highly motivated playing close to home conditions.

One surprise win from these teams could completely change the tournament standings.

Why This Tournament Could Become Unpredictable

The expanded format has made the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 far more competitive than previous editions.

Smaller teams now have better coaching, more professional players, and stronger domestic systems. The gap between top teams and underdogs is slowly becoming smaller.

That is why this tournament could produce several shocking results.

Sri Lanka Looks Like the Strongest Dark Horse

Among all the underdog teams, Sri Lanka appears to have the best chance of making a deep run in the tournament.

They have experienced players, fearless batting, and a bowling attack capable of handling pressure situations.

If they play confidently and start the tournament strongly, Sri Lanka could become the surprise package of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026.
