A WPL Final That Changed the Conversation

The Women’s Premier League has already played a major role in the growth of women’s cricket, but the 2026 final between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Capitals may have changed the sport in an even bigger way.

In a thrilling contest at Vadodara, Delhi Capitals posted a huge total of 203 for 4, the highest score ever recorded in a WPL final. However, Smriti Mandhana led RCB to a remarkable chase of 204 for 4 with two balls remaining.

The match was more than just an exciting final. It became a powerful example of the ongoing WPL tactical evolutionthat is influencing teams around the world.

    Breaking the Old Scoring Mindset

For many years, teams believed that a total around 160 was enough to win most women’s T20 matches. The RCB versus DC final challenged that idea completely.

Delhi Capitals scored more than 200 runs and still lost. This result showed that even massive totals are not always safe when batting lineups play with confidence and freedom.

As a result, coaches and analysts are rethinking how they build innings. The latest women’s cricket tactical trends suggest that teams now aim for much higher scores instead of settling for totals that were once considered match-winning.

This change is already influencing preparations for major international tournaments.

A New Role for Top Order Batters

One of the biggest lessons from the final came from Smriti Mandhana’s outstanding innings. She scored 87 runs from just 41 balls and attacked from the start of the chase.

Traditionally, teams often relied on one batter to anchor the innings while others played attacking shots around them. Mandhana showed that modern cricket may require a different approach.

Instead of focusing on survival, she took control early and put pressure back on the bowlers. Her aggressive style helped make the chase easier for the rest of the batting lineup.

This is an important part of the ongoing WPL influence on international cricket, as national teams increasingly encourage top order players to score quickly from the beginning.

The Growing Value of Defensive Bowling

The match also highlighted the importance of smart bowling in high scoring contests. While many bowlers struggled, Lauren Bell stood out by conceding only 19 runs in her four overs.

Her performance showed that controlling runs can sometimes be just as valuable as taking wickets. In modern T20 cricket, bowlers who can stay calm and maintain discipline are becoming more important.

Many teams are now looking for bowlers who can handle pressure during difficult situations. This has become one of the key women’s cricket tactical trends emerging from franchise cricket.

WPL’s Impact on the International Game

The influence of the Women’s Premier League continues to grow every season. Players are gaining experience in pressure situations, while coaches are learning new ways to approach matches.

The dramatic final between RCB and DC perfectly demonstrated the ongoing WPL tactical evolution. It showed that teams can chase huge targets, attack fearlessly, and rethink traditional strategies.

More importantly, it highlighted the strong WPL influence on international cricket. National teams are now studying matches like this to prepare for global tournaments.

As women’s cricket continues to evolve, the lessons from this unforgettable final are likely to shape tactics and decision making for years to come.
