Women’s Hundred 2026 Shows the Value of Former International Stars in Coaching

The Women’s Hundred 2026 was memorable not only for Trent Rockets’ maiden title but also for the impact former international cricketers made from the dugout.

New Zealand legend Suzie Bates served as batting coach for Sunrisers Leeds, while former England fast bowler Katherine Sciver-Brunt began her coaching career as Trent Rockets’ assistant coach. Both teams reached the final, demonstrating the value experienced former players can bring beyond their playing careers.

    Experience Making a Difference

Trent Rockets claimed the title with an emphatic eight-wicket victory after bowling Sunrisers Leeds out for just 91 at Lord’s.

Throughout the tournament, Sunrisers’ batting was led by Annabel Sutherland and Phoebe Litchfield, while Trent Rockets consistently impressed with a disciplined and balanced bowling attack that produced its best performance in the final.

It would be unfair to attribute those performances solely to Bates or Sciver-Brunt. However, their presence within the coaching groups highlights how former elite players can help guide and support the next generation.

Sciver-Brunt represented Trent Rockets as a player between 2021 and 2023 before returning as assistant coach this season. Bates, meanwhile, brought more than two decades of international experience to the Sunrisers setup before retiring from international cricket after the Women’s T20 World Cup.

A Lesson for Indian Women’s Cricket?

Their involvement also raises an important question: is Indian women’s cricket making full use of its former internationals?

India has produced several legendary players whose experience could continue benefiting the game after retirement.

Mithali Raj is contributing as a consultant and mentor for women’s cricket operations with the Andhra Cricket Association, where recent age-group success and the launch of the Women’s Andhra Premier League reflect encouraging progress.

Jhulan Goswami has continued working across domestic and franchise cricket, including with Mumbai Indians and Bengal, while Nooshin Al Khadeer guided India to back-to-back ICC Women’s Under-19 T20 World Cup titles.

Meanwhile, coaches such as Sunetra Paranjpe and VR Vanitha are developing young talent through specialist roles at the BCCI Centre of Excellence.

    More Than Head Coaches

Former players do not all need to become head coaches.

Their knowledge can be equally valuable as mentors, batting or bowling specialists, talent scouts, player-development coaches or members of support staff responsible for planning and opposition analysis.

Perhaps their greatest contribution is sharing the experience gained from performing at the highest level and helping younger players prepare for the challenges of international cricket.

    An Opportunity Worth Considering

The Women’s Hundred 2026 has shown how successful teams can benefit from keeping former international players involved after retirement.

Bates and Sciver-Brunt are recent examples of how experience can strengthen a team’s culture and player development, even when the spotlight remains on those on the field.

For Indian women’s cricket, the challenge is not finding experienced former players – it is ensuring their knowledge continues to shape the next generation.
