South Africa escaped with a tense two-wicket victory over Pakistan in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup after a match that swung dramatically between the two sides. Despite a remarkable all-round performance from captain Fatima Sana, Pakistan fell just short as South Africa chased down 127 with three overs remaining.
The result looked unlikely for much of the contest. South Africa’s bowlers dominated the first half, reducing Pakistan to a disastrous position before Sana launched a stunning rescue act. Later, Pakistan’s bowlers fought back bravely to make the chase far more difficult than expected, but crucial fielding errors ultimately proved costly.
South Africa Tear Through Pakistan’s Batting
Pakistan endured a nightmare start after being asked to bat. Marizanne Kapp made an immediate impact, trapping Muneeba Ali lbw with the first ball of the innings before dismissing Gull Feroza with a superb delivery that crashed into the stumps.
Ayabonga Khaka joined the attack soon after and removed Natalia Pervaiz, while Pakistan’s problems worsened through a series of costly run-outs. Miscommunication between batters repeatedly handed South Africa wickets and left Pakistan reeling at 55/8.
At that stage, a total below 100 appeared inevitable.
Fatima Sana Produces a Captain’s Knock
With wickets falling around her, Fatima Sana refused to surrender. The Pakistan captain delivered one of the finest innings of her international career, transforming the match with a fearless unbeaten 55 from just 38 deliveries.
Sana carefully rebuilt before launching a late assault on the South African attack. Once Kapp completed her spell, the right-hander accelerated dramatically, finding boundaries regularly and punishing anything loose.
Her innings became even more destructive during the closing overs. Pakistan scored 42 runs from the final 19 deliveries, including 19 from the last over, allowing them to reach 126/9 and give their bowlers something to defend.
The innings was a reminder of Sana’s growing importance to Pakistan, not only as a captain but also as a genuine match-winner.
Dercksen Takes Control of the Chase
South Africa’s pursuit started cautiously, with Pakistan’s bowlers creating pressure early. Sana struck an important blow by dismissing Sune Luus and restricting the scoring rate during the opening overs.
However, Annerie Dercksen quickly changed the momentum.
The powerful batter launched a counterattack that completely altered the complexion of the chase. She hammered boundaries all around the ground and produced some of the cleanest hitting seen in the tournament so far.
A devastating over against Rameen Shamim yielded 21 runs and placed South Africa firmly in control. Dercksen eventually scored a brilliant 52, while Nadine de Klerk added a valuable 37 to keep the chase moving forward.
Pakistan Fight Back but Fielding Costs Them
Despite Dercksen’s dominance, Pakistan refused to let the game slip away. Regular wickets kept South Africa under pressure and prevented them from closing out the chase comfortably.
Sana completed a memorable all-round display by claiming three wickets, while Pakistan’s bowlers continued to chip away at the batting lineup. As wickets fell, nerves began to spread through the South African camp.
Even when the scores were level, Pakistan still found a breakthrough as Sana dismissed de Klerk, leaving South Africa eight wickets down and the contest still alive.
Unfortunately for Pakistan, their fielding mistakes throughout the chase proved expensive. Several missed opportunities allowed South Africa to stay ahead of the game, and the winning run eventually arrived through a wide delivery down the leg side.
Mixed Emotions for Both Teams
For South Africa, the victory delivered valuable points but also exposed areas that need improvement. Their bowlers were outstanding and Dercksen’s explosive half-century provided the foundation for victory, yet they allowed Pakistan back into a contest they appeared to have under complete control.
For Pakistan, the defeat was painful but encouraging at the same time. After collapsing to 55/8, few would have expected them to push one of the tournament favourites to the brink.
Fatima Sana emerged as the standout performer, producing an unbeaten fifty and claiming three wickets in a magnificent captain’s performance. While Pakistan ultimately fell short, her all-round display ensured the match remained alive until the very final moments.
