Charlie Dean has described the chance to captain England as a “massive honour” after being appointed skipper for the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand.
Dean will lead England in the three-match series after regular captain Nat Sciver-Brunt was ruled out with a calf injury. Sciver-Brunt sustained the injury while playing for The Blaze against Warwickshire, with England taking a cautious approach ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 on home soil.
The ODI series against New Zealand beginning on May 10 is an important part of England’s preparation for the World Cup, which starts on June 12 in Birmingham. England are expected to be among the leading contenders as they host the tournament for the first time since winning the inaugural edition in 2009.
Speaking to Sky Sports Cricket, Dean said the captaincy opportunity comes at a positive stage in her career.
“It feels like a massive honour, and it feels like really, really good, good timing for me. I feel like I am starting to bring a bit more confidence and assuredness about my own game,” Dean said.
Dean’s Growing Role in England Setup
Dean has developed into one of England’s most dependable white-ball players in recent years. Known for her off-spin and composure under pressure, the 25-year-old has become a regular figure in both ODI and T20I squads.
Her progress has been especially notable in the ODI format. In 2024, she became the fastest bowler in women’s ODI history to reach 50 wickets, achieving the milestone in 26 matches during England’s tour of New Zealand. She has also contributed useful runs in the lower order, giving the side additional balance.
Sciver-Brunt Injury Concern
Sciver-Brunt’s absence remains a concern for England ahead of the T20 World Cup. The all-rounder suffered a minor left calf tear and has been advised to rest following medical scans.
The England and Wales Cricket Board will assess her fitness before the T20I series and the World Cup.
England Build Towards Busy Summer
Dean’s appointment also reflects England’s squad depth during a key period of preparation. The team will face New Zealand in three ODIs and three T20Is before another white-ball series against India later in the summer.
England have also added Maia Bouchier as batting cover for the ODI series, strengthening their options during Sciver-Brunt’s absence.
New Zealand, led by Amelia Kerr, are expected to provide strong opposition as both teams refine their plans before the World Cup.
Major Leadership Moment for Dean
For Dean, the series represents another important step in a career that has developed quickly. From establishing herself as one of England’s leading spinners to now captaining the national side, she has taken on increasing responsibility.
With the World Cup approaching, Dean has an opportunity to show her leadership qualities while helping England build momentum toward another ICC title challenge.
