England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt will miss the upcoming ODI series against New Zealand after sustaining a minor tear in her left calf. The ECB described her absence as a precaution, with her fitness set to be reassessed ahead of the T20I leg of the tour, which forms part of England’s build-up to the home T20 World Cup in June.
Squad Adjustments
With Sciver-Brunt unavailable, vice-captain Charlie Dean has been brought back into the ODI squad, despite initially being set to miss the series as she continues her recovery from a back stress fracture. Top-order batter Maia Bouchier has also been included to provide additional cover.
Injury Details
Sciver-Brunt picked up the injury while representing The Blaze in a Metro Bank Cup match against Warwickshire. She contributed 47 off 32 balls and returned figures of 2 for 45 from seven overs in that game.
After experiencing discomfort post-match, scans conducted on Saturday confirmed the calf issue, leading to a recommendation for rest.
Impact on Preparation
England recently announced their T20 World Cup squad, with players taking part in a leadership programme organised by the British Army. Due to her injury, Sciver-Brunt did not participate in the physical components of the programme.
Build-Up to the World Cup
England have not played competitive cricket since the ODI World Cup late last year but held a training camp in South Africa in March. The team is scheduled to face New Zealand in both ODI and T20I series this month, followed by a three-match T20I series against India.
Their preparations will culminate in the opening match of the T20 World Cup against Sri Lanka at Edgbaston on June 12.
Injury Concerns in the Squad
England are managing multiple injury concerns, with Charlie Dean gradually returning from a back issue, while Sarah Glenn remains unavailable due to a broken finger. However, the squad has been strengthened by the return of allrounders Freya Kemp and Dani Gibson after extended layoffs.
