Issy Wong claimed her maiden five-wicket haul in international cricket as England Women defeated Ireland Women by six wickets in Derby to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
Wong’s outstanding figures of 5/33 helped dismiss Ireland for 165 before England chased the target with 27 overs to spare. Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp finished the job with an unbeaten 47-run partnership.
Wong Leads England’s Bowling Display
After being asked to bat first, Ireland lost Alice Tector to a sharp run-out from Sophia Dunkley in the second over before Wong struck with a superb delivery to dismiss captain Gaby Lewis.
Ireland slipped to 83/4 before Amy Hunter and Leah Paul steadied the innings with a 57-run partnership.
Hunter battled hard for 64 from 79 balls, registering her second successive half-century despite finding scoring difficult for much of her innings.
Mady Villiers played an important supporting role, removing Orla Prendergast and Rebecca Stokell in successive overs to increase the pressure.
Wong returned to trigger the collapse, dismissing Paul, Louise Little and Cara Murray before claiming the prized wicket of Hunter to complete her maiden international five-for.
Tilly Corteen-Coleman wrapped up the innings with two late wickets as Ireland were bowled out for 165 in 47 overs.
England Cruise in the Chase
England began positively as Maia Bouchier and Sophia Dunkley raced to 54 inside eight overs.
However, a mix-up between the pair resulted in Dunkley being run out, before Bouchier, who had scored a century in the opening ODI, departed for an entertaining 45 from 31 balls.
Kia McCartney then removed Alice Capsey and Jodi Grewcock to briefly give Ireland hope.
Gibson and Kemp Finish the Job
With England requiring stability, Dani Gibson and Freya Kemp combined to end the contest in style. The pair added an unbeaten 47 runs from just 38 deliveries, attacking the Irish bowlers while keeping the chase firmly under control.
Gibson finished unbeaten on 36, while Kemp remained not out on 29 as England reached 166/4 to seal victory with plenty of overs remaining.
England Secure Series Win
England’s dominant all-round performance secured the ODI series. Wong’s career-best bowling figures laid the platform, while Bouchier’s aggressive start and the composed finishing partnership between Gibson and Kemp ensured the hosts completed another comfortable victory and moved into a 2-0 series lead.
