India have officially qualified for the inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy, with the first edition of the tournament set to take place in Sri Lanka in February 2027. The new ICC event will bring six of the world’s leading women’s teams together for a short and highly competitive T20I tournament.
The tournament will run from February 14 to February 28, 2027. Sri Lanka will host the event, while India, Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa have secured their places in the six-team field.
India Qualify for the Women’s Champions Trophy
India Women Champions Trophy campaign will begin after India secured qualification through the ICC Women’s T20I rankings pathway. India’s strong performances across the bilateral T20I calendar and major ICC competitions helped them remain among the leading teams in the world.
India qualifying for the Women’s Champions Trophy is another important opportunity for the team to compete for an ICC title. India have established themselves as one of the strongest sides in women’s cricket and will enter the new tournament with expectations of challenging for the trophy.
The focus will now shift towards building the right squad and preparing for a demanding schedule against the world’s best teams.
Six Teams Make Up the Field
The Women’s Champions Trophy teams list features six nations. Sri Lanka have qualified automatically as the hosts, while India, Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa earned their places through the rankings pathway.
The six teams are:
- Sri Lanka
- India
- Australia
- England
- New Zealand
- South Africa
The limited field means there will be very little room for mistakes. Every team will face the other five sides during the round-robin stage, making each match important in the race for the final.
T20I Format Makes the Tournament Different
The biggest feature of the new Women’s Champions Trophy is its format. Unlike the traditional men’s Champions Trophy, which has historically been associated with 50-over cricket, the women’s tournament will be played entirely as a T20I competition.
The six teams will play a single round-robin stage. This will produce 15 group matches, followed by the final on February 28. In total, the tournament will have 16 matches.
The top two teams after the group stage will qualify directly for the final. There will be no long knockout stage, meaning teams will need to perform consistently throughout the competition.
Sri Lanka to Host the Inaugural Event
Sri Lanka will have the special opportunity to host the first edition of the tournament. As the host nation, they have already secured their place in the competition and will face five of the strongest teams in women’s cricket.
The February window is also important for the ICC calendar. The event has been placed in a period that can help manage the busy schedule around major women’s franchise competitions, including the Women’s Premier League and The Hundred.
A New Chapter for Women’s Cricket
The inaugural Women’s Champions Trophy adds another major tournament to the international women’s cricket calendar. With only six teams involved, the competition is expected to produce closely fought matches from the opening game.
For India, qualification provides another chance to compete for an ICC trophy. Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa will provide strong competition, while Sri Lanka will look to make the most of home conditions.
With the tournament scheduled for February 14 to 28, 2027, the first edition promises to be a major new event in women’s international cricket. India’s qualification ensures that one of the world’s strongest teams will be part of this historic beginning.
