Deepti Sharma has developed into one of the renown all-rounders in Indian women’s cricket. As she turns 29, the left-handed batter and right-arm offspinner already owns several major records, memorable performances and a World Cup-winning legacy.
Her career reached its highest point at the 2025 ODI World Cup, where she played a decisive role in helping India secure their first global title.
From Agra to International Cricket
Born on August 24, 1997, in Agra, Deepti developed an interest in cricket at the age of nine.
Her brother Sumit Sharma, a former Uttar Pradesh pacer, initially helped with her training. During a practice session at the Ekalavya Sports Stadium, a long-range direct hit from Deepti caught the attention of former India player and selector Hemlata Kala, who subsequently helped guide her development.
Deepti began her senior domestic career with Uttar Pradesh in 2014-15 before later representing Bengal and eventually returning to Uttar Pradesh.
International Breakthrough
Deepti made her ODI debut against South Africa in Bengaluru on November 28, 2014.
One of her earliest major records came in 2016, when she became the youngest Indian, male or female, to claim an ODI five-wicket haul. She finished with 6 for 20 against Sri Lanka, becoming only the second Indian woman at the time to take six wickets in an ODI innings.
A year later, she produced one of the greatest ODI innings by an Indian woman, scoring 188 against Ireland.
Deepti and Poonam Raut shared a remarkable 320-run opening partnership, helping India reach 358 for 3.
Strong World Cup Record
At the 2017 ODI World Cup, Deepti contributed 216 runs and 12 wickets as India reached the final before losing narrowly to England.
She later became an established all-format player, making her T20I debut against Australia in 2016 and Test debut against England in 2021.
In Test cricket, one of her finest performances came against England in Mumbai in 2023, when she took 9 for 39 in the match, including career-best innings figures of 5 for 7.
Success in Franchise Cricket
Deepti has also made an impact across major franchise competitions.
She represented Western Storm during their title-winning 2019 Kia Super League campaign and later played in the WBBL and The Hundred.
UP Warriorz signed her for INR 2.6 crore in the inaugural WPL auction in 2023.
In 2024, Deepti became the first Indian to take a WPL hat-trick, achieving the feat against Delhi Capitals. She also finished as UP Warriorz’s leading run-scorer that season and was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player.
Historic 2025 ODI World Cup
The defining tournament of Deepti’s career came at the 2025 ODI World Cup.
She finished with 215 runs and 22 wickets in nine matches and was named Player of the Tournament.
Deepti also became the first cricketer, male or female, to complete the double of 200 runs and 20 wickets in a single World Cup edition.
Her biggest performance came in the final against South Africa in Mumbai. Deepti scored 58 from 58 balls before taking 5 for 39, helping India claim their first global championship.
