England Captain Declared Fit After Injury Layoff
England Women have received a major boost ahead of their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final after captain Nat Sciver-Brunt confirmed she is ready to return for the clash against South Africa at The Oval.
Sciver-Brunt missed England’s final three group-stage matches after suffering a calf injury while chasing against Ireland in Southampton. She retired hurt after scoring 48, with scans revealing a muscle strain in the same calf that had troubled her earlier this year.
Following an intensive rehabilitation programme, England’s captain has now been cleared to return for the knockout fixture.
Exhaustive Recovery Process
Speaking before the semi-final, Sciver-Brunt revealed the lengths she and England’s medical staff went to in order to accelerate her recovery.
“I’m being put through my recovery paces, and I’ve worked really hard to get myself to this position,” she said.
“We literally threw everything at it. We used different methods to get the recovery right… eating the right things, taking the right supplements, sitting in machines, oxygen tanks. I suppose just everything that we can do to get to this point. We’ve tested it enough to be comfortable, and I suppose what will happen out on the pitch will happen.”
England also confirmed that Sciver-Brunt underwent MBST (Molecular Biophysical Stimulation) treatment during her rehabilitation.
The therapy involves placing the injured muscle inside a machine similar to an MRI scanner, where electromagnetic energy is used to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. Although the treatment remains relatively uncommon in cricket, former NBA legend Shaquille O’Neal has previously spoken about using similar technology during his playing career.
Sciver-Brunt completed seven one-hour sessions before being passed fit.
“It involved sitting for an hour and not moving with my leg in a horseshoe-shaped thing. We literally threw everything at it,” she explained.
Strong Form Before Injury
The injury interrupted an impressive run of form for England’s skipper.
Before the tournament, she scored 57 against India in a warm-up fixture before beginning the World Cup with an unbeaten 46 against Sri Lanka and 48 against Ireland prior to her retirement hurt.
Her absence was handled impressively by vice-captain Charlie Dean, who guided England through victories over Scotland, West Indies and defending champions New Zealand to finish unbeaten at the top of Group 2.
Captain Praises England’s Performances
Despite being sidelined, Sciver-Brunt enjoyed watching England continue their unbeaten campaign.
“I think it’s been really enjoyable watching. We’ve had some brilliant batting partnerships,” she said.
“We’ve obviously had some times where we’ve had some tricky periods and had to rebuild a little bit as a batting group. There are times where we would have wanted to be a bit more clinical in the chase. But yeah, I think as a group we’ve played some brilliant cricket. We’ve shown some great composure in moments like that.”
Selection Headache for England
Sciver-Brunt’s return creates a welcome selection dilemma after several players impressed during her absence.
Sophia Dunkley, who came into the side after the injury, scored 120 runs across three innings and strengthened England’s already formidable batting line-up.
Rather than viewing the situation negatively, Sciver-Brunt believes the injury allowed other players to gain valuable experience.
“It’s funny how it works itself out. Lots of people had a great chance to have experience out in the middle, certainly with the bat. Missing out is never nice but seeing people grow in confidence and getting the chance to show their skills with a little bit more time at the crease has been really special. I’m really excited to be able to join them again.”
England Eye Revenge Against South Africa
England now turn their attention to a familiar opponent in South Africa, with a place in Sunday’s Women’s T20 World Cup final at Lord’s on the line.
The semi-final also presents an opportunity for revenge after South Africa eliminated England in the semi-finals of both the 2023 Women’s T20 World Cup and the 2025 Women’s Cricket World Cup.
With their captain fully fit and back in the starting XI, England will be hoping to maintain their unbeaten record in the tournament and secure a place in the World Cup final.
