England Make a Powerful Start to the Women’s T20 World Cup
England could not have asked for a better start to the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup. Playing in front of their home crowd at Edgbaston, they delivered a dominant performance against Sri Lanka and secured a massive 87-run victory.
The hosts posted a stunning 219/1 in 20 overs, the highest team total in Women’s T20 World Cup history. They then bowled Sri Lanka out for 132, showing their strength in both batting and bowling.
The result sent a strong message to the rest of the tournament and highlighted why England are among the favorites to lift the trophy.
Amy Jones and Danni Wyatt-Hodge Set the Platform
After Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bowl, England’s opening pair took control of the match from the start.
Amy Jones was promoted to open alongside Danni Wyatt-Hodge, and the move worked perfectly. Rather than taking unnecessary risks, the pair focused on building a solid foundation while keeping the scoreboard moving.
Their smart running between the wickets put pressure on Sri Lanka’s fielders and helped England reach 51 without loss in the Powerplay. By the halfway stage of the innings, England had already reached 100 without losing a wicket.
The opening partnership was worth 135 runs and completely shifted the game in England’s favor.
Danni Wyatt-Hodge Leads the Charge
Danni Wyatt-Hodge produced one of the finest innings of the tournament so far. She remained unbeaten on 105 from 62 balls and played the anchor role perfectly.
Her innings included 13 boundaries and showed excellent control throughout the match. She kept finding gaps and punished loose deliveries whenever the bowlers made mistakes.
After Amy Jones was dismissed for 53, Sri Lanka hoped to slow England down. Instead, England became even more dangerous.
Nat Sciver-Brunt Finishes in Style
Stand-in captain Nat Sciver-Brunt returned from injury and made an immediate impact. She blasted an unbeaten 46 from only 22 balls and gave England a powerful finish.
Sri Lanka struggled to stop the scoring in the final overs. England attacked every area of the field and added valuable runs at the death.
The final over alone produced 26 runs, helping England reach their record-breaking total of 219/1.
England’s Bowlers Complete the Job
Sri Lanka needed a special performance to chase such a huge target, but England’s bowlers never allowed them to settle.
A key moment came when Charlie Dean dismissed captain Chamari Athapaththu for just four runs. The early wicket removed Sri Lanka’s biggest threat and left the team under pressure.
Freya Kemp then took control in the middle overs. She mixed her deliveries cleverly and picked up three wickets in a single over. Kemp finished with outstanding figures of 4/21, the best bowling performance of the match.
Sri Lanka never recovered and were eventually bowled out for 132.
A Warning to the Rest of the Tournament
This victory has placed England at the top of their group and boosted their confidence ahead of tougher challenges.
The combination of strong opening batting, explosive finishing, and disciplined bowling made this a complete team performance. With a huge clash against Australia coming soon, England have already shown that they are ready to compete for the Women’s T20 World Cup title on home soil.
