Elite sport can produce moments of emotion that go far beyond the final score, and Lauren Bell experienced exactly that after England secured their place in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 final.
Following England’s 40-run semi-final victory over South Africa at The Oval on July 2, the fast bowler did not immediately join the celebrations in the middle. Instead, she headed towards the boundary to share the moment with her family in the stands.
The cameras captured Bell in a tearful embrace with the people who had supported her throughout her journey, creating one of the heartfelt images of England’s semi-final triumph.

Bell had played an important role in England’s victory, finishing with figures of 2 for 28 after dismissing Sune Luus and Ayabonga Khaka.
Once the match was over, however, the competitive intensity quickly gave way to emotion.
Reflecting on the scenes after the final ball, Bell explained why celebrating with her family meant so much.
“Yeah, it was my family. I think they’re my biggest supporters, so it’s just nice to share that moment and then, I guess, the win today with them. And yeah, just getting excited for Sunday.”
Her reaction reflected more than the excitement of one victory. It also represented the release of pressure following several difficult years and painful tournament exits for England.
England Recover From Early Semi-Final Trouble
England’s place in the final had looked far from certain during the opening stages of the semi-final.
The hosts slipped to 23 for 3 inside the fourth over as South Africa’s bowlers made early inroads and placed the batting lineup under serious pressure.
Captain Nat Sciver-Brunt then produced a match-defining innings despite returning from injury. She scored 75 from 47 balls and shared a crucial 133-run partnership with Heather Knight.
Their stand transformed England’s position and carried the side to 169, a total that ultimately proved beyond South Africa.
England’s bowlers then completed the job by restricting the Proteas and sealing a place in the final at Lord’s.
Years Of Frustration Add To Bell’s Emotion
Bell admitted that the significance of the victory and England’s recent struggles contributed to her emotional reaction.
“It’s massive. I got a bit overwhelmed. I guess we’ve had a lot of tough times, I guess, as an England team over the last few years. So yeah, it was just really special to get them that win, maybe not too stressful for them. Um, yeah, just overwhelmed really.”
The result gave England the opportunity to compete for a global title on home soil and offered relief after several disappointing campaigns.
For Bell and her teammates, reaching the final represented both progress and the chance to turn previous setbacks into something historic.
Australia Await At Lord’s
England will face Australia in the final at Lord’s on Sunday, renewing one of the biggest rivalries in women’s cricket.
Australia are expected to enter the contest as favourites, but England will carry strong momentum and the advantage of playing in front of a home crowd.
For Bell, the occasion has a special personal meaning. She watched England’s 2017 global triumph as a young supporter and is now preparing to appear in her first World Cup final.
“I mean, it’s my first one and I was a kid in 2017, so it’s been a while. So yeah, just excited.”
The opportunity to play a World Cup final at Lord’s completes a remarkable journey from supporter to leading member of England’s bowling attack.
Bell Ready To Embrace The Occasion
While much of the build-up will focus on tactics, matchups and the pressure of facing Australia, Bell is also aware of the scale of the occasion.
England have developed through difficult experiences and now have the opportunity to deliver their strongest performance on the biggest stage.
Bell is hoping for a packed home crowd and an atmosphere worthy of a World Cup final.
“The occasion couldn’t get much bigger. Hopefully, it’ll be a full, full home crowd. And um, yeah, I think it’ll be an amazing day. It’s why you play, it’s the games you play for.”
Her emotional celebration at The Oval reflected both the journey already completed and the excitement surrounding what comes next.
England are now one win away from the title, and Bell is preparing to take part in the biggest match of her career.
