England Seamer Rewarded for Outstanding Form
England fast bowler Lauren Bell has been named the ICC Women’s Player of the Month for May, earning the prestigious award for the first time in her career following a series of impressive performances across both One-Day Internationals and T20 Internationals.
Bell enjoyed a remarkable month with the ball, consistently delivering breakthroughs for England and establishing herself as one of the team’s most reliable performers. Her success came during a crucial period of the international season as England prepared for a demanding schedule and the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Dominant ODI Series Against New Zealand
The highlight of Bell’s month came during England’s ODI series against New Zealand, where she finished as the leading wicket-taker despite featuring in only two matches.
She opened the series with figures of 2 for 38 before producing an outstanding spell of 3 for 20 in the third ODI. Across her two appearances, Bell collected five wickets at an impressive average of 13.40 while maintaining an economy rate of just 4.36.
Her ability to strike early and control the scoring rate played a major role in England’s success throughout the series.
Continued Success in T20 Cricket
Bell carried her excellent form into the shortest format, continuing to trouble opposition batters against both New Zealand and India.
Across four T20 Internationals, she claimed eight wickets at an average of 14.00 and an economy rate of 7.00. Among her standout displays were figures of 2 for 23 against New Zealand and 3 for 34 against India in Chelmsford.
Her performances once again highlighted her effectiveness with the new ball and her ability to deliver key breakthroughs during important stages of an innings.
Recognition of Steady Development
The award reflects Bell’s impressive growth over recent seasons. Once viewed as one of England’s brightest pace-bowling prospects, she has developed into a leading figure within the attack and an increasingly influential performer across all formats.
Her consistency throughout May provided England with confidence heading into a busy summer and reinforced her status as one of the team’s most important players.
Speaking after receiving the award, Bell expressed her delight at earning the recognition during the home season.
“I’m delighted to win this award. Performing well in front of home crowds is always fun and hugely satisfying. Playing for England is a huge honour and I am just proud to be able to contribute to our team!”
Growing Support for Women’s Cricket
Bell also highlighted the continued growth of women’s cricket and the increasing support from fans around the world.
“Women’s cricket has been growing at an incredible pace, and the fantastic crowds at the Women’s T20 World Cup really highlight that progress. The support from fans has been amazing, and I hope to give them more to cheer over the next few weeks.”
The England seamer now focuses on the ongoing World Cup campaign, where she is set to play a key role in England’s pursuit of global success.
Strong Competition for the Award
Bell emerged victorious ahead of two strong contenders.
Pakistan batter Gull Feroza enjoyed a prolific month, scoring 256 runs in three ODIs against Zimbabwe at an extraordinary average of 128.00 and strike rate of 103.64, including back-to-back centuries. She also added 82 runs in four T20Is at a strike rate of 157.69.
New Zealand’s Maddy Green was equally impressive, compiling 125 runs during the ODI series against England at an average of 62.50 before adding 93 runs in three T20Is at an average of 46.50.
Despite the outstanding efforts of both batters, Bell’s tally of 13 wickets across formats and her consistent impact in key moments ultimately secured her first ICC Women’s Player of the Month award.
A Key Figure for England’s World Cup Ambitions
With England targeting success at the Women’s T20 World Cup, Bell’s award serves as further evidence of her growing influence within the side. Her ability to deliver wickets in all phases of an innings makes her a vital component of England’s bowling attack.
As the tournament progresses and the knockout stages approach, England will be hoping their in-form pace spearhead can continue producing the performances that earned her international recognition throughout May.
