Chloe Tryon’s Player of the Match performance against India came with a unique acknowledgment, as she credited her success to Keshav Maharaj after a decisive spell of 3 for 22 that dismantled the opposition’s top order.
Maharaj, currently not engaged with the men’s side during their break, has been working closely with the South Africa Women’s team as a tactical consultant during the T20I series. His involvement has already delivered results, particularly in Durban, a venue where his experience proved invaluable.
Tactical Input Makes Immediate Impact
For South Africa’s spin group, including Tryon and Sune Luus, Maharaj’s presence brought fresh insights and high-level expertise. His guidance offered a different perspective that complemented the existing coaching setup.
“It’s been awesome to work with him,” Luus remarked. “Sometimes a coach can be repetitive, and think he knows everything, but coming from a number one bowler in the world, we just absorbed everything he was saying the last couple of days. It was phenomenal to have him in the camp, just his experience as well.”
Tryon’s performance reflected that influence, with her disciplined approach targeting the stumps consistently. Her wickets – Smriti Mandhana, Jemimah Rodrigues, and debutant Anushka Sharma – came through controlled lines and lengths that left little room for scoring opportunities.
Maharaj’s Prediction Adds Motivation
Tryon also revealed that Maharaj’s pre-match words played a role in motivating her performance.
“Kesh(av) Maharaj has been with us and he said before the game that he thinks one of our spinners will be Player of the Match, so I am happy I could do it for him,” Tryon said during the post-match broadcast.
Wider Impact Across the Bowling Unit
Maharaj’s influence has extended beyond Tryon. Nonkululeko Mlaba, who regards him as a mentor, has adapted her approach during the series. While known for her attacking style, Mlaba has focused more on controlling the run rate, reflecting Maharaj’s emphasis on building pressure through consistency. She currently stands as the most economical bowler in the squad, conceding just 5.87 runs per over.
Local Knowledge Proves Crucial
Durban’s conditions added another dimension, with Maharaj’s familiarity with the venue offering a strategic advantage. According to Luus, the surfaces did not behave as expected, making his insights particularly valuable.
“He’s our inside man, and a Durban boy, so he knew the conditions very well. I think that definitely worked in our favour,” Luus explained. “The pitch has not been playing like a normal Durban slow pitch. It was a belter in the first game and we thought it was going to be a bit slower today, but it still played very well.”
Looking Ahead
As the series moves to Johannesburg, South Africa Women will look to continue benefiting from similar inputs. The team remains open to involving experienced voices to maintain their edge as the competition progresses.
