India have suffered a major injury setback ahead of the Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026, with Jemimah Rodrigues ruled out of both the continental tournament and the upcoming Asian Games because of a high-grade right hamstring tear.
The BCCI confirmed the injury after Rodrigues underwent assessment at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru. Pratika Rawal has been named as her replacement in India’s 15-member squad for the Asia Cup.
Rodrigues Suffers Hamstring Tear During The Hundred
Rodrigues sustained the injury on August 3 while representing Southern Brave in The Hundred in England.
She had been enjoying a productive tournament, scoring 143 runs in six innings at an average of 35.75 and a strike rate of 131.19.
After returning to India, Rodrigues was assessed by the BCCI medical team, which diagnosed a high-grade hamstring tear requiring an extended rehabilitation period.
The injury rules her out of the Asia Cup as well as the Asian Games, which begin in Japan on September 17.
Pratika Rawal Called Into India Squad
The Women’s Selection Committee has named Pratika Rawal as Rodrigues’ replacement.
Rawal had been due to play for Warwickshire Bears during the remainder of the Women’s One Day Cup 2026 but will instead join India for the Asia Cup.
Her inclusion provides another batting option as India adjust to the loss of Rodrigues, who has regularly played an important role through the middle order.
Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2026 Groups
The tournament begins in the UAE on August 28 and features eight teams divided into two groups.
Group A: India, Pakistan, Thailand, Hong Kong
Group B: Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, UAE, Indonesia
India, captained by Harmanpreet Kaur, begin their campaign against Thailand on August 30.
The defending champions are Sri Lanka, who won their first Women’s Asia Cup title in 2024.
India’s Updated Women’s Asia Cup Squad
Harmanpreet Kaur (C), Smriti Mandhana (VC), Shafali Verma, Bharti Fulmali, Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh (WK), G. Kamalini (WK), Arundhati Reddy, Prema Rawat, Radha Yadav, Sree Charani, Renuka Thakur, Nandni Sharma, Kranti Gaud, Pratika Rawal.
Major Setback for India
Rodrigues’ absence removes one of India’s most versatile middle-order batters, capable of both stabilising an innings and accelerating when required.
Rawal now has an opportunity to establish herself on the international stage, while India will need to quickly adjust their batting combinations before the opening game.
The BCCI’s communication, issued on August 14, confirmed both Rodrigues’ injury and Rawal’s inclusion, ending the former’s hopes of featuring in two major multi-team events.
