Scotland Recover Through Darcey Carter’s Unbeaten Fifty
New Zealand kept their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign alive with a six-wicket victory over Scotland after recovering from a shaky start to successfully chase 132 in the 19th over.
After choosing to field first, New Zealand initially struggled to contain Scotland as the opening pair put together a 51-run partnership inside the first seven overs. Darcey Carter once again led the charge, continuing her outstanding tournament with an unbeaten 72, while Katherine Fraser contributed 7 before eventually falling at extra cover.
Despite another dropped catch in the field, New Zealand gradually wrestled back control. Melie Kerr dismissed Scotland captain Kathryn Bryce with a well-disguised googly before the visitors tightened the scoring through the middle overs.
Devine and Spinners Pull the Match Back
With Carter and Sarah Bryce threatening to accelerate, New Zealand captain Sophie Devine introduced herself into the attack and made an immediate impact.
Her first delivery trapped Sarah Bryce lbw for 25 before she dismissed Ailsa Lister later in the over to shift the momentum firmly towards New Zealand. Nensi Patel added another wicket by bowling Megan McColl as the two bowlers combined to choke Scotland’s scoring during the closing overs.
Melie Kerr then wrapped up the innings in style, dismissing Priyanaz Chatterji lbw before Pippa Sproul chipped a simple catch to Jess Kerr. Between them, Melie Kerr and Nensi Patel claimed four wickets while conceding only 42 runs from their combined eight overs.
Carter remained unbeaten on 72 to guide Scotland to 131/7 from their 20 overs.
Scotland Strike Early to Raise Hopes of an Upset
Scotland’s bowlers made an excellent start while defending the modest total.
Captain Kathryn Bryce removed both Melie Kerr and Isabella Gaze in her opening spell, while Rachel Slater produced a superb delivery to bowl Sophie Devine as New Zealand slumped to 26/3 during the powerplay.
The early breakthroughs briefly put Scotland in control and raised hopes of another major upset.
Sharp and Halliday Rescue the Chase
With the top order back in the pavilion, Izzy Sharp and Brooke Halliday calmly rebuilt the innings.
The pair combined for a match-winning 101-run partnership for the fourth wicket, absorbing the pressure before steadily increasing the scoring rate as the innings progressed.
Sharp produced the finest knock of her international career, finishing with an outstanding 62. She timed the ball beautifully once settled, regularly finding the boundary and bringing up her half-century from just 38 deliveries.
Halliday played the perfect supporting role, remaining unbeaten on 41 and rotating the strike effectively while punishing loose deliveries.
Their partnership completely transformed the chase, reducing the required rate below a run a ball before New Zealand comfortably reached the target in the 19th over.
New Zealand Stay Alive, Scotland Eliminated
The victory keeps New Zealand’s hopes of reaching the semi-finals alive while moving their net run rate into positive territory. They now face a must-win clash against England and will also need other results to fall in their favour.
The match also marked an important milestone for Lea Tahuhu, who claimed her 100th T20 International wicket during her first appearance of the tournament.
For Scotland, the defeat officially ends their semi-final hopes despite another impressive performance from Darcey Carter, whose unbeaten 72 lifted her to the top of the tournament’s run-scoring charts.
While Scotland once again showed they could challenge one of the competition’s strongest sides, New Zealand’s experience ultimately proved decisive as Izzy Sharp and Brooke Halliday guided the defending champions to a crucial victory.
