India’s Deaf Women’s Cricket Team is set to embark on a landmark tour of Sri Lanka this July, marking the first time the side will participate in an overseas bilateral series. The development represents a significant step forward for inclusivity in cricket, with hopes that it will open new avenues for recognition and growth in the sport.
The tour will feature a five-match T20I series against Sri Lanka, providing players with their first exposure to international competition abroad.
Selection Process and Preparation
Men’s head coach Dev Dutt highlighted the importance of the occasion while outlining the ongoing selection process.
“This marks a historic moment, as it is the first time the Indian Women’s Deaf Cricket Team is preparing for an international bilateral T20I series.
“The team is set to play five T20I matches against Sri Lanka. For many players, including some in the current squad, this is their first international tour and first experience at this level, with no prior participation in world championships. The squad selection is currently underway, with a shortlist of 15 players being finalized,” Dutt explained.
The squad has been identified following a national tournament in Gurgaon, which served as the primary platform for selection. Andhra Pradesh emerged as champions, while Delhi finished as runners-up.
“Preparations began following a recent national tournament held in Gurgaon, where teams from multiple states participated. Delhi secured second place, while Andhra Pradesh finished first. Based on performances in this tournament, top players from across states have been shortlisted,” Dutt added.
Focus Beyond Results
Team management has emphasised that the tour is not solely about results but also about providing players with valuable international exposure. Every member of the shortlisted group is expected to receive opportunities during the series.
Men’s Team Also in Action
While the women’s side prepares for its historic tour, the Indian Deaf Men’s Team is set for an overseas assignment in South Africa. The team will play two ODIs and three T20Is at the Sinoville Cricket Club in Pretoria from April 25 to May 2.
The Indian Deaf Cricket Association (IDCA) recently unveiled the team’s new official jersey ahead of the tour.
Support and Leadership
IDCA President Sumit Jain expressed confidence in the men’s squad and acknowledged the support behind the initiative.
“Our players are well-prepared and excited for the championship. They are ready to showcase their skills and compete for the prestigious title. I wish them the very best for the series.
“We could not have held this championship without the continuous support of our principal partner, Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, Chairman of Serum Institute of India, who helps us every day in celebrating Deaf Cricket. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank KFC India, Hero (We Care – A Hero MotoCorp CSR Initiative), Steel Authority of India Limited, Kaizzen, Impact Research & Measurement Pvt. Ltd., Shiv Naresh Sports Pvt. Ltd., and RB Foundation for being our support partners. Your support has been instrumental in making this championship a grand success,” Jain said.
Led by captain Virender Singh and vice-captain Sai Akash, the men’s squad brings together players from across the country.
Expanding Horizons
As both the men’s and women’s teams prepare for their respective international assignments, the upcoming tours underline a broader shift toward expanding opportunities in Indian cricket, ensuring wider representation and recognition for players across formats and pathways.
