Minnu Mani Leads Impressive Bowling Performance
India A Women made a winning start to their tour of England with a five-wicket victory over England A Women in the opening T20 at Northampton.
After electing to bowl first, the visitors delivered a remarkable performance with the ball to restrict England A to 126/7 before chasing down the target in just 18.1 overs with 11 deliveries remaining.
The Indian bowlers made an immediate impact as Saima Thakor dismissed Grace Scrivens for a duck in the opening over. England A’s top order continued to struggle when Jintimani Kalita removed Ella McCaughan for 6, while Shabnam Shakil sent captain Kira Chathli back for just 1, leaving the hosts under early pressure.
Grewcock Fights Lone Battle for England A
With the top order collapsing, Jodi Grewcock produced a determined innings to rescue England A.
The middle-order batter remained unbeaten on 54 from 47 deliveries, striking five boundaries while holding the innings together. Emma Jones provided valuable support with 26 from 24 balls, and Ryana MacDonald-Gay added a useful 17 late in the innings.
However, regular wickets prevented England A from building momentum.
Minnu Mani was the standout performer for India A, returning outstanding figures of 3/21 from her four overs to control the middle and death overs. Saima Thakor also impressed with figures of 2/32 as England A finished with a below-par total of 126/7.
Vrinda Gives India A a Solid Start
India A’s chase began with an early setback after Deeya Yadav was dismissed for 6 by Ryana MacDonald-Gay.
Dinesh Vrinda quickly shifted the momentum back in India’s favour with an attacking knock of 32 from 24 deliveries. Her innings included five boundaries and ensured the required run rate remained comfortably under control.
Purvaja Verlekar then provided stability with a composed 23 from 27 balls, helping India A maintain control despite England A’s attempts to fight back.
Kamalini Finishes the Chase in Style
England A spinner Sophia Smale briefly raised hopes by claiming 2/23, but India A never allowed the match to drift away.
Wicketkeeper-batter Gunalan Kamalini played the decisive innings, remaining unbeaten on 35 from just 24 balls. Her aggressive approach, which included a strike rate of 145.83, effectively ended England A’s chances of defending the modest target.
Captain Anushka Sharma also made a useful contribution with 17 before Minnu Mani struck the winning runs to complete a comprehensive victory in the 19th over.
Although Ryana MacDonald-Gay finished with respectable figures of 2/28, England A’s total proved insufficient against a confident Indian batting lineup that completed a professional all-round performance to take a 1-0 lead in the series.
