The opening match of the Ireland Tri-Nation Women’s T20I Series 2026 in Dublin became a dominant display from West Indies Women, who defeated Ireland Women by eight wickets with 51 balls to spare.
In a match featuring controlled bowling, attacking batting and important partnerships, West Indies took command early and chased 104 in only 11.3 overs. Hayley Matthews was the clear standout, producing a brilliant unbeaten innings that shifted the game completely in the visitors’ favour.
After being sent in to bat, Ireland Women made a careful start but lost Alana Dalzell for a five-ball duck at 15/1 in the third over. Amy Hunter showed intent during her short stay, hitting two boundaries in 11 from 9 balls, before Zaida James dismissed her at 19/2 to increase the pressure on the hosts.
Rebecca Stokell attempted to settle the innings with 7 from 8 deliveries, but Jahzara Claxton removed her at 23/3 in the fifth over as Ireland struggled to build momentum.
Captain Orla Prendergast then joined Leah Paul to rebuild the innings. Their 44-run partnership became Ireland’s strongest stand of the match. Prendergast combined caution with some attacking strokes during her 25 from 22 balls, striking two fours and one six. Paul played the anchor’s role with 21 from 21 deliveries.
However, just as Ireland looked ready to push on, Matthews struck with the ball and dismissed Paul at 67/4 in the 11th over.
Ireland’s middle and lower order tried to lift the scoring rate but could not turn starts into major contributions. Alice Tector made 10 from 15 balls before falling as Qiana Joseph’s third wicket, while Louise Little added 6. Ava Canning scored a quick 6 from 4 deliveries, and Arlene Kelly remained unbeaten on 9 from 9 balls.
Ireland kept losing wickets regularly, with Aimee Maguire and Cara Murray also departing cheaply. They were eventually bowled out for 103 in 17 overs, a total that looked below par on a good batting surface.
West Indies Bowlers Keep Ireland Under Control
West Indies Women delivered a strong collective bowling performance. Qiana Joseph was the standout bowler, taking 3 for 8 from her two overs while troubling Ireland’s batters with accuracy and variation.
Zaida James and Jahzara Claxton picked up two wickets each, while Karishma Ramharack and Matthews took one wicket apiece. Chinelle Henry and Afy Fletcher also kept tight lines, making sure Ireland never built sustained pressure.
Matthews Takes Charge Of The Chase
In reply, West Indies Women lost Deandra Dottin early for 3 when Ava Canning struck at 23/1 in the fourth over. But the breakthrough did little to slow the visitors, as captain Matthews took complete control of the chase.
She dominated Ireland’s bowlers with a powerful innings built on clean strokeplay and fearless intent. Matthews finished unbeaten on 82 from just 44 balls, hitting 11 fours and three sixes at a strike rate of 186.36.
Joseph supported her with 6 from 9 balls before Prendergast dismissed her at 35/2. From there, Matthews and Stafanie Taylor removed any remaining uncertainty.
The pair added an unbeaten 69-run stand to take West Indies to victory. Taylor stayed calm with 10 not out from 9 deliveries as the visitors reached 104/2 in just 11.3 overs.
Ireland’s bowlers struggled to control the aggressive chase. Canning was the only bowler to make a major impact, finishing with 2 for 16 from her four overs. Dalzell had some economical moments, while Murray and Maguire found it difficult against the attacking West Indies batters.
Despite a few disciplined overs in the middle phase, Ireland did not have enough runs to trouble a powerful Caribbean lineup.
