Brits and Wolvaardt Build Perfect Platform
South Africa improved their chances of reaching the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-finals with a 88-run victory over the Netherlands after Tazmin Brits produced the first T20 International century of her career.
Needing both a win and a significant boost to their net run rate, South Africa posted a massive 208/1, their second-highest total in Women’s T20I history. Brits starred with an unbeaten 114, while captain Laura Wolvaardt contributed 45 as the opening pair shared a record 121-run partnership.
After a cautious start, both batters settled quickly. Brits struck the innings’ first boundary before Wolvaardt found her rhythm with trademark drives through the off side. The pair accelerated throughout the powerplay, taking South Africa to 66 without loss after six overs.
Although Wolvaardt departed for 45 after edging behind, the damage had already been done.
Dercksen Provides the Late Fireworks
Annerie Dercksen once again impressed at number three, continuing her outstanding tournament.
Initially content to rotate the strike and allow Brits to dominate, Dercksen shifted gears brilliantly during the closing overs. She smashed an unbeaten 37 from just 16 deliveries, including a six and several boundaries, as she and Brits added 87 runs from only 39 balls.
Brits completed her maiden T20I century before finishing unbeaten on 114, powering South Africa beyond the 200-run mark for the second time in the tournament.
Netherlands Make Positive Start
Despite the daunting chase, the Netherlands refused to back down.
Phoebe Molkenboer attacked from the outset, taking on Shabnim Ismail with three consecutive boundaries in one over. Sanya Khurana also batted confidently as the Dutch openers put together a 58-run opening partnership, their sixth-highest stand in Women’s T20Is.
The Netherlands reached 50 without loss after the powerplay, briefly putting South Africa under pressure.
South Africa Trigger Dramatic Collapse
Once the opening partnership was broken, South Africa quickly regained complete control.
Molkenboer top-scored with 41, while Khurana contributed 36 before both were dismissed. Sterre Kalis added 26, but the required scoring rate continued to climb beyond reach.
Shabnim Ismail’s aggressive short-ball tactics finally paid off when she removed Kalis, triggering a dramatic collapse. The Netherlands lost eight wickets for just 20 runs during the closing stages as they attempted to increase the scoring rate.
Ayabonga Khaka delivered the decisive blow by claiming three wickets in the final over, including two in successive deliveries, to finish with outstanding figures of 3/19.
South Africa Boost Semi-Final Hopes
Although the Netherlands finished on 120/8 and avoided being bowled out, South Africa secured the emphatic victory they needed to improve their net run rate.
The win lifted South Africa’s net run rate into positive territory and kept them firmly in contention for a place in the semi-finals. More importantly, the performance showcased their batting firepower, with Brits’ maiden T20I century and Dercksen’s explosive finish providing the perfect confidence boost ahead of the final stages of the tournament.
