Surrey Women maintained their impressive run in the Women’s T20 Vitality Blast, securing a controlled four-wicket win over Yorkshire Women at Leeds. They completed the chase with 27 balls remaining in a competitive contest that featured aggressive strokeplay, key partnerships, and disciplined bowling spells. While momentum shifted across both innings, Surrey’s positive approach with the bat ultimately made the difference.
Yorkshire Build Strong Start Before Losing Momentum
After being asked to bat first, Yorkshire Women began steadily, with their experienced opening pair providing early assurance. Captain Lauren Winfield-Hill set the tone with a fluent 23 from 16 balls, striking five boundaries to put pressure on the bowlers. Erin Thomas complemented her well, anchoring the innings with a composed 42 off 29 deliveries, including eight boundaries. Together, they added 60 runs in just 5.6 overs, giving Yorkshire a solid platform in the powerplay.
Surrey, however, struck back effectively once the opening stand was broken. Ryana MacDonald-Gay dismissed Winfield-Hill, triggering a collapse in the middle overs. Jess Jonassen departed for 2 after failing to build on her start, while Sterre Kalis contributed 18 from 24 balls as she attempted to steady the innings. Yorkshire slipped from 60/1 to 84/4 as Surrey’s bowlers applied sustained pressure.
Kalea Moore was particularly effective, returning figures of 3/21 from her four overs and making key breakthroughs at crucial moments. Alice Davidson-Richards also impressed with 2/23, while Danielle Gregory added 1/21. MacDonald-Gay played a significant role as well, finishing with 3/29, including the wickets of Winfield-Hill and Olivia Thomas, ensuring Yorkshire could not accelerate towards the end.
The lower order offered some resistance, with Rachel Slater scoring 8 from 8 balls and Ria Fackrell adding 10 off 10. Beth Langston (6) and Maddie Ward (7) chipped in, but Surrey’s tight bowling and sharp work in the field restricted any late surge. Yorkshire concluded their innings at 133/9 in 20 overs, a total that lacked a final push despite a promising start.
Surrey’s Aggressive Chase Seals the Result
Surrey Women began in explosive fashion, immediately shifting the pressure onto Yorkshire. Bryony Smith led from the front, scoring 21 off just 8 balls, including five boundaries at a strike rate of 262.50. Her rapid start, combined with Alice Davidson-Richards’ intent, helped Surrey reach 25 in just 1.3 overs before the first wicket fell.
Davidson-Richards continued to drive the innings forward with a brisk 29 from 16 deliveries, hitting five boundaries. Alongside Kira Chathli, who contributed 14 from 11 balls, Surrey maintained a high scoring rate and moved to 43 before Chathli was dismissed by Jess Jonassen.
Jonassen proved to be Yorkshire’s standout bowler, finishing with 3/25 in her four overs. She accounted for Smith, Chathli, and Laura Harris, keeping the contest alive. Yorkshire found further encouragement when Paige Scholfield was run out, reducing Surrey to 83/4 in 7.6 overs. Laura Harris added 19 off 15 balls, including three boundaries, before departing at 86/5 (8.5), creating a brief opening for Yorkshire.
However, Jemima Spence and Alice Monaghan ensured there would be no late collapse. Spence remained unbeaten on 20 from 17 balls, while Monaghan anchored the finish with a composed 29 not out off 21 deliveries, striking six boundaries. Their unbroken stand guided Surrey to 134/6 in just 15.3 overs, completing a comfortable chase.
For Yorkshire, Holly Garton and Olivia Thomas claimed one wicket each, while Rachel Slater delivered an economical spell despite going wicketless.
