Nigar Sultana has reached a significant milestone in Bangladesh Women’s cricket, becoming the player with the most matches as captain in Women’s T20 Internationals for the country. She surpassed Salma Khatun’s previous record of 65 matches by leading the side for the 66th time, marking a notable moment in her leadership tenure.

Since taking charge in 2022, Nigar has captained Bangladesh in 66 WT20Is, recording 26 wins and 39 losses, with a win percentage of around 39. Her tenure reflects both the challenges faced by the team and their gradual development on the international stage.

    Consistency with the Bat

Alongside her leadership, Nigar Sultana has remained a key contributor with the bat in T20Is. In over 118 matches, she has accumulated 2323 runs at an average of approximately 26.7. Her record includes 11 half-centuries and a century, with a highest score of 113*, which stands as the highest individual total for Bangladesh Women in the format.

Her strike rate of around 90 highlights her ability to balance stability and scoring rate, particularly in the middle order.

    Key Role Behind the Stumps

Nigar’s impact extends beyond batting. As wicketkeeper, she has taken 26 catches and effected 47 stumpings in WT20Is, playing an important role in Bangladesh’s fielding unit. Her glovework has often contributed to crucial moments in matches.

    Contribution in ODIs

In Women’s One-Day Internationals, Nigar has also maintained consistent performances. Across more than 68 matches, she has scored 1585 runs at an average of 27.8, including nine half-centuries and one century, with a top score of 101.

The longer format has showcased her ability to anchor innings and build partnerships, adding stability to the batting lineup.

    Leadership in Transition Phase

Bangladesh Women continue to develop as a competitive side internationally, and Nigar’s captaincy has come during a period of transition. Under her leadership, the team has shown improvements in competitiveness and discipline, particularly in closely contested matches.

Her calm approach on the field and involvement in tactical decisions, including field placements and bowling changes, have been notable aspects of her captaincy.

    Following Salma Khatun’s Legacy

Nigar’s record surpasses that of former captain Salma Khatun, who led Bangladesh in 65 WT20Is with 27 wins. While Salma laid the foundation, Nigar’s tenure represents a phase focused on progression and growth.

    A Milestone Beyond Numbers

Reaching the milestone of most WT20Is as captain for Bangladesh highlights Nigar Sultana’s consistency and importance to the team. As she continues her career, both as a leader and a player, her role remains central to Bangladesh Women’s ambitions in international cricket.
