Australia captain Sophie Molineux has been declared fit for the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England, with selectors confirming a 15-player squad that includes Lucy Hamilton and Grace Harris, while Darcie Brown has been left out.

The 19-year-old Hamilton earns a place despite limited international experience, having played just one T20I, while Harris returns to strengthen the squad. Australia have also opted for a spin-heavy combination, selecting legspinners Alana King and Georgia Wareham alongside left-arm orthodox Molineux and offspin allrounder Ashleigh Gardner.

    Spin Options and Selection Balance

National selector Shawn Flegler indicated that all four spin options could feature in the same XI depending on conditions, though he clarified the current order within the group.

“Molineux is our skipper and she’s going to play… left-arm orthodox, it’s highly valued in the women’s game,” Flegler said. “Georgia’s been a No. 1 legspinner. Alana’s come in and done really well. But I think the pecking order is pretty clear. We’ve got Ash, Soph and Georgia, and then if conditions allowed, then Alana comes into it as well.”

    Brown Omitted Despite Past Contributions

Darcie Brown’s omission stands out given her role in Australia’s T20 World Cup success in South Africa in 2023, where she delivered key performances in both the semi-final and final. However, her recent T20I form has been limited, with just three appearances in the 2024 edition in the UAE and no wickets in four matches this year against India and West Indies. She also did not complete her full quota of overs in those outings.

Flegler acknowledged her exclusion while backing her long-term prospects.

“She was obviously disappointed,” Flegler said. “We’ve been trying to get Darc up over the last couple of years to be a frontline bowler and bowl in that powerplay and she just hasn’t quite nailed that opportunity, but we still think she’s going to have a great career for Australia as well.

“She’s still a young fast bowler, this is certainly not the end, and she may well get called up during the World Cup anyway.”

    Hamilton’s Rapid Rise

Hamilton’s inclusion follows a swift rise at international level since her debut earlier this year. She has featured in one T20I, two ODIs and one Test, making a strong impression with six wickets on Test debut against India and showing effectiveness in white-ball matches in the Caribbean.

Australia head coach Shelley Nitschke highlighted her attributes.

“She gets some good bounce, bowls a really heavy ball; it’s a real point of difference, especially for our attack,” Nitschke said. “There’s not a lot of them around.”

She will be the only left-arm seamer in the squad, joining a pace group that includes Kim Garth, Megan Schutt, Nicola Carey, Annabel Sutherland, Tahlia McGrath and Ellyse Perry.

    Harris Returns to Strengthen Batting

Grace Harris returns to the squad after missing the West Indies tour, adding depth to the lower-middle order. Although she has played only one T20I in the last year and batted once in her last four matches, she recently scored a century in Queensland’s WNCL final and contributed to Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s WPL title-winning campaign.

“She’s a handy all-round option and someone who can take the game away from an opposition,” Flegler said.

    Squad Composition and Preparations

Annabel Sutherland also returns after being rested for the Caribbean series, where she is expected to play a significant role with the ball. Her batting position remains flexible, having batted at No. 7 and No. 8 in recent T20Is.

Beth Mooney will take over wicketkeeping duties following Alyssa Healy’s retirement, while Tahlia Wilson will travel as a reserve.

Australia are scheduled to play three matches against South Africa at Arundel Castle on May 31, June 2 and 4, before opening their T20 World Cup campaign against the same opposition at Old Trafford on June 13.
