Bangladesh Recover After Early Collapse
South Africa Women kept their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final hopes alive with a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Bangladesh Women, successfully chasing 118 with four balls to spare.
After winning the toss and batting first, Bangladesh endured a nightmare start as Marizanne Kapp struck with the very first ball of the innings. Juairiya Ferdous departed without scoring, while Shabnim Ismail soon removed Taj Nehar for just one, leaving Bangladesh struggling at 14/2 after four overs.
Sobhana Mostary and Sharmin Akhter steadied the innings with a crucial 56-run partnership for the third wicket. Sobhana anchored the recovery with a patient 42 from 48 deliveries, including three fours and a six, while Sharmin added a valuable 22 off 29 balls.
Their stand gave Bangladesh much-needed stability before Nonkululeko Mlaba broke the partnership by dismissing Sharmin in the 15th over.
Nigar Sultana Provides Late Momentum
Captain Nigar Sultana accelerated during the closing overs to give Bangladesh a competitive total.
After Sobhana fell for 42 to Nadine de Klerk, Nigar continued to attack despite losing Shorna Akter late in the innings. The skipper remained unbeaten on 32 from just 20 balls, striking four boundaries and a six, while Ritu Moni finished unbeaten on one as Bangladesh closed on 117/5 from their 20 overs.
South Africa Bowlers Keep Bangladesh Under Control
South Africa’s bowling attack maintained excellent discipline throughout the innings.
Kapp set the tone with an outstanding spell of 1/9 from four overs at an economy rate of just 2.25. Ismail supported brilliantly with figures of 1/15, while Mlaba claimed 2/22 to break Bangladesh’s key partnerships. De Klerk also made an important contribution by removing the well-set Sobhana Mostary, ensuring Bangladesh never gained complete control.
Dercksen Anchors the Chase
South Africa’s reply also began poorly after captain Laura Wolvaardt was dismissed for a first-ball duck by Marufa Akter.
Tazmin Brits and Annerie Dercksen rebuilt the innings through a steady 51-run partnership. Brits made 20 from 24 deliveries before Nahida Akter struck, while Dane van Niekerk fell cheaply soon after as Bangladesh continued to fight back.
The defining partnership came between Dercksen and Kapp, who calmly added 43 runs for the fourth wicket to bring South Africa back into control. Dercksen played with maturity throughout her 45 from 45 balls, striking two fours and two sixes before becoming Nahida’s second wicket.
South Africa Hold Their Nerve
Although South Africa lost a few late wickets, they never allowed the required run rate to climb out of reach.
Kapp contributed a useful 16 before being run out, while Nadine de Klerk added 15 valuable runs. Chloe Tryon then remained unbeaten on eight from five deliveries to guide South Africa to 118/6 in 19.2 overs and complete the chase with four balls remaining.
Bangladesh Bowlers Fight Until the End
Bangladesh’s bowlers kept the contest alive throughout the chase.
Nahida Akter was the standout performer with 2/24, dismissing both Tazmin Brits and Annerie Dercksen. Marufa Akter provided the perfect start by removing Wolvaardt with the first ball of the innings, while Sanjida Akter Meghla and Ritu Moni each claimed one wicket. Rabeya Khan also impressed with an economical four-over spell that cost only 17 runs.
South Africa Stay Alive
South Africa’s superior bowling performance and composed batting under pressure ultimately proved the difference.
Marizanne Kapp was deservedly named Player of the Match after delivering a superb all-round display, returning figures of 1/9 with the ball before contributing 16 important runs during the chase. Dercksen’s composed 45 provided the foundation for victory as South Africa secured two crucial points to keep their hopes of reaching the Women’s T20 World Cup semi-finals firmly alive.
