New Zealand clinched the ODI series against South Africa with a 66-run victory in the third match at Basin Reserve in Wellington on April 4, completing a strong comeback after losing the opening game.
A superb unbeaten century from Maddy Green anchored the hosts’ recovery from an early collapse, while Rosemary Mair’s five-wicket haul ensured South Africa fell short in the chase.
Green, Halliday Rescue New Zealand
New Zealand were in early trouble at 3 for 3 after Tumi Sekhukhune removed Suzie Bates and Amelia Kerr, while Ayanda Hlubi dismissed Georgia Plimmer.
Green and Brooke Halliday then rebuilt the innings with a decisive 211-run partnership for the fourth wicket. Green remained unbeaten on 141, while Halliday fell just two runs short of a century, scoring 98.
Their stand lifted New Zealand to a competitive 306 for 7 after 50 overs.
South Africa Start Strong
South Africa began the chase positively with a 68-run opening partnership. Captain Laura Wolvaardt then combined with Annerie Dercksen for a 77-run stand, keeping the visitors in a strong position.
At 145 for 1, South Africa appeared well placed, but Wolvaardt’s dismissal in the 26th over triggered a collapse. The score quickly shifted to 154 for 4, changing the momentum of the match.
Mair Leads Bowling Effort
South Africa attempted to rebuild, but regular wickets prevented them from sustaining momentum. Rosemary Mair led the attack with figures of 5 for 50, dismantling the middle and lower order.
Amelia Kerr provided support with two wickets, as South Africa were bowled out for 240 in 46.1 overs, falling 66 runs short of the target.
Series Sealed in Style
New Zealand’s ability to recover from early setbacks with the bat and apply consistent pressure with the ball proved decisive in the series decider.
The victory secured the series for the hosts, highlighting the impact of Green’s match-winning innings and Mair’s standout spell.
