India has emerged as the leading contender to host the inaugural ICC Women’s Champions Trophy in February 2027 after Sri Lanka lost its hosting rights. The International Cricket Council is looking for an alternative venue following concerns over governance and government interference in Sri Lanka Cricket. India is now considered the most practical option, with the final decision expected at an upcoming ICC Board meeting.
The tournament is planned as a six team T20 competition and is tentatively scheduled to take place between February 14 and February 28, 2027. If India is confirmed as the host, it would add another major international women’s cricket event to the country’s growing cricket calendar.
Why Sri Lanka Lost Hosting Rights
Sri Lanka Cricket is currently being administered by a government appointed interim body known as the Transformation Committee. The committee was created to oversee constitutional and structural changes within the cricket administration.
However, ICC rules require member boards to operate independently from political control. Since Sri Lanka Cricket is not currently being led by a democratically elected board, its representatives have also been prevented from attending ICC Board meetings.
This is not the first time Sri Lanka has lost an ICC hosting opportunity because of governance concerns. The 2024 Men’s Under 19 World Cup was also moved away from Sri Lanka and eventually hosted by South Africa.
The latest decision has created uncertainty around the ICC Women’s Champions Trophy, forcing the governing body to consider another country at relatively short notice.
India Women’s Champions Trophy Host Favourite
India has several advantages that make it the natural choice to take over hosting duties. The BCCI has a large network of international cricket venues that can accommodate major tournaments and already has experience handling international events.
The country’s stadiums also have modern broadcast facilities and strong logistical support. Since the tournament involves only six teams, India would have enough infrastructure to stage the competition without requiring a large number of venues.
The commercial value of women’s cricket is another major factor. The success of the Women’s Premier League has helped increase interest in women’s cricket across India. Television audiences, sponsorship opportunities and strong fan engagement could make India a financially attractive location for the inaugural tournament.
Six Teams Expected to Compete
The proposed Women’s Champions Trophy 2027 is expected to feature six teams. The original qualification structure included the top five ranked T20I teams along with the host nation.
Australia, England, India, New Zealand and South Africa are among the teams expected to be involved based on the ranking-based qualification system. The final position could have major consequences for Sri Lanka if India takes over hosting duties.
Sri Lanka originally had an automatic place because it was the host. If the new format follows the top five-ranked teams plus the host model, Sri Lanka could lose its automatic qualification and potentially miss the tournament altogether.
What Happens Next?
The ICC Board is expected to make the final decision on the host in the coming period. If India is selected, the BCCI will have to work with the ICC to finalise venues, scheduling and tournament logistics.
For Indian women’s cricket, hosting the first ICC Women’s Champions Trophy would be another major opportunity to showcase the sport in front of a large home audience. With strong infrastructure and growing interest in women’s cricket, India appears to be the leading candidate to host the historic tournament in February 2027.
