Botswana Women delivered a controlled and disciplined performance to secure a 23-run victory over Malawi Women in the 9th match of the Kalahari Women’s T20I Tournament 2026. In a game shaped by steady batting and consistent bowling, Botswana managed key moments effectively to come out on top.
Choosing to bat first, Botswana began cautiously as the opening pair of Laura Mophakedi and Pako Mapotsane focused on building a foundation. Runs were hard to come by early, and the partnership produced 17 before Mapotsane was stumped for 9 off 18 balls at 17/1 in 6.1 overs. Oraitile Kgeresi followed soon after for 5, leaving the side at 28/2 in 8.6 overs.
Mophakedi held the innings together with a composed 36 off 46 balls, striking three boundaries and adapting well to the slow conditions. She shared a stabilising stand with captain Tuelo Shadrack, who added 5 before being dismissed at 43/3 in 13.2 overs. Despite the modest scoring rate, the partnership helped Botswana regain control after early setbacks.
A late unbeaten stand between Goabilwe Matome and Amantle Mokgotlhe provided the finishing push. The pair guided Botswana from 71/4 to 87/4 at the end of their 20 overs, with Matome contributing 15* off 20 balls and Mokgotlhe adding 8* from 6 deliveries.
Malawi’s bowlers maintained discipline throughout. Lucy Malino returned figures of 1 for 17 in 4 overs, while Aillinfe Alfonso finished with 1 for 15 in 4 overs. Christina Bwanali claimed a wicket, and Sugeni Kananji bowled a tight spell, conceding just 5 runs in her 4 overs. However, the lack of wickets in the latter stages allowed Botswana to post a competitive total.
Malawi’s reply began poorly as they lost early wickets and slipped to 6/2 within 2.3 overs. Euless Chiraliie was dismissed without scoring, while captain Sophina Chinawa made 4. Praise Maziya also fell early, leaving the score at 7/3 in 3.5 overs.
Sugeni Kananji provided resistance with a counter-attacking 40 off 29 balls, hitting six boundaries to keep Malawi in the contest. She combined with Caroleen Mangulama to take the total to 43/7 in 11.5 overs, but regular wickets prevented any sustained recovery.
A key moment came when Kananji was retired, halting Malawi’s progress. From there, Botswana tightened their control, and despite a brief contribution of 6 from Lucy Wesley, Malawi were bowled out for 64 in 16.2 overs.
Botswana’s bowling effort was led by captain Tuelo Shadrack, who returned figures of 3 for 8 in 4 overs and was named Player of the Match. Pako Mapotsane picked up 2 wickets, while Goabilwe Matome, Kesego Inakale, Amantle Mokgotlhe and Entle Mmese claimed one each.
With strong contributions from Mophakedi and Shadrack, Botswana secured a deserved win to strengthen their standing in the tournament.
