Scotland Women created history at Old Trafford by securing their first-ever victory at the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup, defeating Ireland Women by 40 runs in a memorable Group Stage encounter. Led by an outstanding performance from sisters Kathryn Bryce and Sarah Bryce, and a dominant display from the spin attack, Scotland announced themselves on the world stage with a landmark win.
After posting a competitive 161/5 from their 20 overs, Scotland’s bowlers took complete control of the contest, dismissing Ireland for 121 in 19.1 overs to register a famous victory.
Bryce Sisters Lay the Foundation
Scotland’s innings began cautiously after Ireland opted to bowl first. Darcey Carter contributed 14 from 13 deliveries before falling to Aimee Maguire, while Katherine Fraser added 15 before becoming Ava Canning’s first victim.
With Scotland reduced to 26/2, captain Kathryn Bryce and wicketkeeper Sarah Bryce transformed the innings through a magnificent partnership worth 106 runs.
Kathryn led from the front with a superb 60 from only 39 balls, striking six fours and a six during an innings that combined aggression with composure. At the other end, Sarah Bryce provided excellent support, narrowly missing out on a half-century with a vital 49 from 35 deliveries that included four boundaries and a six.
Their partnership not only rescued Scotland from early trouble but also shifted momentum decisively in their favour.
Ireland fought back in the closing stages through Ava Canning, who removed both Bryce sisters and finished as the standout bowler with figures of 3/27 from four overs. Arlene Kelly also chipped in with a wicket, but Scotland still managed to reach an imposing 161/5.
Ireland Struggle to Build Momentum
Chasing 162 for victory, Ireland never managed to establish the partnerships required to stay in the contest.
Captain Gaby Lewis found scoring difficult and was dismissed for 11 by Katherine Fraser after being stumped by Sarah Bryce. Amy Hunter provided resistance with a fighting 39 from 36 balls, hitting five boundaries before Fraser struck again.
The Irish innings briefly gained momentum through Orla Prendergast, who scored a brisk 33 from 23 deliveries and kept the chase alive with four fours and a six. However, her run-out proved to be a decisive moment that triggered a dramatic collapse.
Gordon and Fraser Spin Scotland to Glory
Once Prendergast departed, Scotland’s spinners took complete control.
Kirstie Gordon delivered the decisive spell of the match, claiming three wickets while conceding only 16 runs from her four overs. The left-arm spinner removed Rebecca Stokell, Leah Paul, and Alice Tector in a devastating burst that shattered Ireland’s middle order.
Katherine Fraser was equally effective, finishing with excellent figures of 3/19. In addition to dismissing Hunter and Lewis, she wrapped up the tail to ensure Ireland never threatened a comeback.
Captain Kathryn Bryce completed a memorable day by contributing with the ball as well, claiming 2/19 and helping close out the chase.
Ireland lost wickets regularly throughout the innings and eventually collapsed to 121 all out, falling 40 runs short of the target.
A Landmark Moment for Scottish Cricket
Scotland’s victory was built on two defining performances. The match-changing 106-run partnership between Kathryn and Sarah Bryce provided the platform for a strong total, while the spin trio of Gordon, Fraser, and Bryce combined to take eight wickets and completely dismantle Ireland’s chase.
For Ireland, Amy Hunter and Orla Prendergast showed glimpses of resistance, while Ava Canning impressed with the ball. However, a lack of substantial partnerships and a damaging middle-order collapse ultimately proved costly.
The result marks a historic milestone for Scotland Women, who finally secured their maiden ICC Women’s T20 World Cup victory and strengthened their belief that they can compete with established international sides on the biggest stage.
