The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) celebrated the city’s cricketing excellence with a high-profile awards ceremony on Wednesday, recognising key contributors to India’s historic ICC Women’s ODI World Cup triumph.
Among those honoured were Jemimah Rodrigues, head coach Amol Muzumdar, bowling coach Aavishkar Salvi, and Under-19 World Cup winner Sanika Chalke. Their achievements were acknowledged as part of Mumbai’s continued influence on Indian cricket, even as the national team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, is currently engaged in a white-ball series in South Africa.
Tribute to India’s Landmark World Cup Triumph
The event also served as a tribute to India’s maiden senior ICC title, secured in the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. The tournament, held from September 30 to November 2 across India and partly in Sri Lanka, concluded with India defeating South Africa by 52 runs in the final at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai.
Harmanpreet Kaur became the first Indian captain to lift an ICC trophy at the senior level, marking a historic moment. Following the victory, she shared the occasion with former players Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, and Anjum Chopra, who were part of the tournament’s broadcast panel.
Mumbai’s Strong Contribution to the Campaign
Mumbai’s impact on the title-winning campaign was significant. Jemimah Rodrigues played a key role with the bat, finishing as India’s third-highest run-scorer with 292 runs at a strike rate of 101.03 and an average of 58.40 in seven innings. Her performances included a half-century and an unbeaten century against Australia in the semi-final.
Amol Muzumdar’s role as head coach and Aavishkar Salvi’s work as bowling coach were also recognised for their contributions to the team’s success. Sanika Chalke was honoured for her role in India’s Under-19 World Cup victory in Malaysia, where the team, led by Niki Prasad, successfully defended their title.
Domestic Success and Special Recognitions
The MCA also acknowledged its successful domestic teams, including winners of the Senior Women’s T20 Trophy, the Women’s Under-15 One-Day Trophy, and the Under-23 Women’s One-Day Trophy, highlighting consistent performances across age groups.
The ceremony was attended by several notable figures, including former India cricketers Sunil Gavaskar, Dilip Vengsarkar, Rajeev Kulkarni, and Diana Edulji, along with state ministers Ashish Shelar and Aditi Tatkare. MCA president Ajinkya Naik presided over the event and said:
“This evening stands as a powerful testament to the standards Mumbai cricket sets for itself, uncompromising excellence, built on legacy and driven by relentless ambition.
“These achievements are not just milestones, but benchmarks for the future. Our focus remains clear: to strengthen this ecosystem, elevate performance, and ensure the next generation carries this legacy forward at an even greater scale. I congratulate all the awardees who continue to uphold the highest standards of Mumbai cricket.”
Lifetime Achievement Honours
Lifetime Achievement Awards were presented to Shobha Pandit (cricketer) and Shrikant Tigdi (administrator) for 2025-26, while Chandrakant Patankar (cricketer) and Ravindra Savant (administrator) were honoured for 2024-25, recognising their long-standing contributions to the game.
Focus on Upcoming Challenges
As India continue their tour of South Africa, they trail 0-3 in the five-match T20I series following defeats by 6 wickets, 8 wickets, and 9 wickets in the third match on April 22 at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg. With the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup approaching in England and Wales from June 12 to July 5, 2026, attention now shifts to how the team responds in the remaining matches.
