Ireland Claim Landmark Win in Bristol
Ireland Women edged past West Indies by six wickets in Bristol, securing their maiden victory in the tournament. The result ended Ireland’s long wait for a Women’s T20 World Cup win and capped a memorable period for Irish cricket after the men’s team also recorded their first-ever T20I victory over India.
Chasing 129, Ireland reached 129/4 in 18.1 overs, with Orla Prendergast producing a match-winning all-round performance.
West Indies Struggle to Build Momentum
After winning the toss and batting first, West Indies made a lively but unstable start.
Qiana Joseph struck two early boundaries before falling for 8 in the opening over. Captain Hayley Matthews tried to rebuild alongside Shemaine Campbelle, but Campbelle departed cheaply for 4 as Ireland struck again.
Stafanie Taylor then joined Matthews and helped add 23 runs for the third wicket, but she struggled for fluency and was dismissed for 16 by Prendergast.
Matthews made 22 from 25 balls before Cara Murray removed her, leaving West Indies at 72/4.
Henry Provides Late Runs
Deandra Dottin and Chinelle Henry briefly revived the innings with a 23-run fifth-wicket partnership.
Dottin scored 21 from 28 balls before Murray struck again, while Henry provided the most valuable late contribution. She remained unbeaten on 27 from 21 deliveries, hitting three boundaries to help West Indies reach 128/7.
Aaliyah Alleyne added a useful unbeaten 5 from two balls, while 14 extras also boosted the total.
Ireland Bowlers Share the Work
Ireland’s bowlers produced a disciplined collective display.
Aimee Maguire led the attack with 2/22 from four overs, striking early and then again at the death. Cara Murray was outstanding in the middle overs, finishing with 2/13 from her four overs and removing both Matthews and Dottin.
Prendergast chipped in with 1/29, while Arlene Kelly and Jane Maguire also claimed wickets as Ireland kept West Indies to a chaseable score.
Prendergast Leads the Chase
Ireland’s chase started steadily as Amy Hunter and captain Gaby Lewis added 26 for the first wicket before Lewis fell for 9.
Hunter then found strong support from Prendergast, and the pair added 62 runs for the second wicket to put Ireland in control. Hunter made 28 from 32 balls before departing with Ireland already well placed at 88/2.
Prendergast carried the innings with confidence, scoring a superb 63 from 44 deliveries. Her knock ensured Ireland stayed ahead of the required rate and moved within touching distance of a historic win.
West Indies Left in Trouble
Ireland completed the chase in the 19th over to seal one of the biggest results in their women’s cricket history.
Although Ireland were already out of semi-final contention, the victory showed the progress of a young squad and gave them a landmark moment on the global stage.
For West Indies, the defeat was a major blow to their qualification hopes. Their semi-final chances are now no longer fully in their own hands, with other results set to play a decisive role in their tournament fate.
