India are using their ongoing T20I series against South Africa as a platform to test combinations and refine their squad ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, with the emphasis placed firmly on preparation rather than immediate results.
With just over 50 days remaining before the tournament, the team management has prioritised building a flexible bowling unit, even as India trail 0-2 in the series.
Team Management Prioritises Long-Term Planning
Bowling coach Aavishkar Salvi highlighted that the approach is deliberate, focusing on giving players exposure across different match situations.
“The kind of impact we want to create during this series, it’s like we want to try out different combinations so that everybody is ready with a little bit of game time coming into the main event,” Salvi said ahead of the third T20I.
He stressed the importance of preparing multiple players for varied roles rather than depending on a fixed group.
Rotation Strategy Across Key Phases
India have rotated bowlers through different phases of the innings, including the powerplay, though results have been limited so far. Across the first two matches, India have taken just one wicket in the opening six overs, while South Africa have lost only six wickets in total while establishing a 2-0 lead.
Despite these challenges, the management remains committed to broadening the team’s options.
“There are a lot of trials and combinations being tried out in terms of who will bowl in the power play, what are our options,” Salvi explained. “So, we are just creating an option bank for all of us and in that while, we are missing out on picking up those early wickets, I can understand. But if you see the larger picture, we are actually giving opportunities to all the bowlers to operate into that segment so that we don’t rely only on a few bowlers coming into the main event.”
Valuable Preparation Against Strong Opposition
Facing South Africa has been viewed as an important part of India’s preparation, given the hosts’ recent performances in global tournaments, including appearances in the finals of the last two T20 World Cups and the 2025 ODI World Cup.
“See, coming into the series, we always thought that it would be a great series for us where we would be challenged by a stronger position and it’s a good preparation for us for the upcoming World Cup. And obviously, we came charged up, we came prepared and we are fully motivated,” Salvi said.
Focus Remains on Growth Ahead of World Cup
Although results have not gone India’s way so far, the team remains confident about its direction. The focus continues to be on improving combinations, defining roles, and ensuring readiness for the global event.
“Two games doesn’t justify what sort of, you know, side we are. So, there are another three games to go and girls are feeling comfortable, confident about their own abilities and I’m sure they are going to bounce back stronger,” Salvi added.
With three matches still remaining in the series, India will continue to refine their approach as they build towards the World Cup, aiming to develop the depth and adaptability required to compete at the highest level.
