Historic Milestone Awaits India Captain
India captain Harmanpreet Kaur created cricket history when taking the field against South Africa in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 on June 21 at Emirates Old Trafford in Manchester. The landmark appearance made her the first player in the history of the game, across both men’s and women’s cricket, to feature in 200 T20 Internationals.
The achievement highlights a remarkable career that has spanned nearly two decades and established Harmanpreet as one of the most influential figures in women’s cricket.
A Journey That Began in 2009
Harmanpreet made her international debut in March 2009 in an ODI against Pakistan before earning her first T20I cap against England in June of the same year.
Since then, she has become one of the most consistent performers in the shortest format. Heading into her 200th appearance, she has scored 4,123 runs in 199 T20Is at an average of 30.09, including 17 half-centuries and one century.
Among her most memorable innings remains the explosive 103 off 51 balls against New Zealand at the 2018 Women’s T20 World Cup. The knock, featuring seven fours and eight sixes, remains one of the finest innings in tournament history.
More Than Just a Batter
While her batting achievements have often grabbed headlines, Harmanpreet has also contributed significantly with the ball. Her off-spin has yielded 32 wickets in T20 Internationals, providing India with a valuable all-round option throughout her career.
Her ability to contribute in multiple facets of the game has made her one of the most complete players in women’s cricket.
Statistically, she ranks among the leading run-scorers in women’s T20I history and remains one of India’s most successful performers in the format.
A World Cup Veteran
Harmanpreet’s longevity is reflected in her remarkable World Cup record. She is the only Indian player and one of just six cricketers globally to have participated in all ten editions of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup since the tournament’s inception in 2009.
Her experience on the biggest stage has been invaluable for India across multiple generations of players.
She has also surpassed Mithali Raj as India’s leading run-scorer in Women’s T20 World Cup history, accumulating 774 runs in 41 matches.
Transforming India as Captain
Harmanpreet was appointed India’s full-time T20I captain in 2016 and has since become the country’s most successful skipper in the format.
Under her leadership, India reached the Women’s T20 World Cup final in 2020 and qualified for the semi-finals in both 2018 and 2023. She has also guided the team to success in continental tournaments and major multi-sport events, including a Commonwealth Games silver medal in 2022 and an Asian Games gold medal in 2023.
Her leadership has played a crucial role in India’s emergence as one of the strongest teams in women’s cricket.
Harmanpreet’s achievements have earned widespread recognition. She received the Arjuna Award in 2017, was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 2023, featured in the TIME100 Next list, and was awarded the Padma Shri in 2026.
These honours reflect her impact not only as a cricketer but also as a role model who has helped elevate women’s cricket in India.
The milestone arrives during a strong start to India’s Women’s T20 World Cup campaign. The team has opened the tournament with convincing victories over Pakistan and the Netherlands and sits among the leading contenders in the competition.
A Legacy That Continues to Grow
Reaching 200 T20 Internationals represents far more than a statistical achievement. It reflects Harmanpreet Kaur’s consistency, adaptability and influence across multiple eras of women’s cricket.
From her debut in 2009 to becoming the first cricketer to reach the 200-match milestone in T20 Internationals, she has witnessed and contributed to the rapid growth of the women’s game.
