Mozambique Women secured a hard-fought 23-run victory over Botswana Women in a low-scoring contest during the sixth match of the Kalahari Women’s T20I Tournament 2026 in Gaborone. The win was shaped by disciplined bowling and key contributions with the bat after a challenging start.
Mozambique Recover After Early Setbacks
Asked to bat first, Mozambique struggled early as Botswana’s bowlers struck quickly. Palmira Cuinica was dismissed for a duck at 5/1, and Olga Mondlane followed with 8 off 15 balls, leaving the side at 15/2 in 4.1 overs.
Tuelo Shadrack led the bowling effort with figures of 2/17 in her four overs, while Wendy Moutswi and Goabilwe Matome picked up a wicket each to keep pressure on the batting side.
Mozambique rebuilt through a steady 44-run partnership between Amelia Mundundo and Wisley Bucuane for the third wicket. Bucuane made 20 off 25 balls before falling at 59/3, while Mundundo contributed 18 off 34 deliveries, departing later at 76/4.
Cristina Magaia added a valuable 22 off 23 balls to push the innings forward, but Botswana continued to chip away at regular intervals. Amantle Mokgothle impressed with 2/12 in three overs, while Shadrack returned to remove Magaia.
Mozambique slipped to 69/6 in 17.3 overs after Isabel Chuma was run out for 4 and Abelina Moiane fell for a duck. A late contribution from Rosalia Haiong (3* off 12) and Regina Mazumba (3* off 3), along with 28 extras, helped them reach 106/7 in 20 overs.
Botswana Struggle in Chase
Chasing 107, Botswana endured an early setback as Oratile Kgeresi was run out for a duck in the opening over. Laura Mophakedi and Wendy Moutswi added 14 runs for the second wicket before Mophakedi was dismissed for 9 at 17/2.
Moutswi, after scoring 2, was forced to retire hurt, further disrupting the chase. Tuelo Shadrack attempted to stabilise the innings with 10 off 13 balls, sharing a brief stand with Goabilwe Matome before falling at 37.
Matome remained unbeaten on 17 off 21 balls but found little support from the rest of the lineup. Regular wickets derailed the chase, with Pako Mapotsane (4) and Amantle Mokgothle (4) falling, while Mpho Modise was dismissed for 0.
Chipanga Turns the Game
Laura Chipanga delivered the decisive spell, claiming 4 wickets for 20 runs in 3.2 overs to break the backbone of Botswana’s batting. She was supported by Palmira Cuinica (1/14), Angelica Salomao (1/10), Regina Mazumba (1/19), and Amelia Mundundo (1/12), all contributing to a sustained bowling effort.
Botswana eventually finished on 83/9 in 17.2 overs, falling 23 runs short despite a brief resistance from Kesego Inakale, who scored 8 off 14 balls.
Conclusion
Mozambique’s ability to recover from early batting pressure and defend a modest total proved decisive. Their disciplined bowling and consistent breakthroughs ensured Botswana never built the partnerships needed to mount a successful chase.
