Australia Women began their ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 campaign in emphatic fashion, defeating South Africa Women by 65 runs in Manchester. In a clash between two of the tournament’s strongest contenders, the six-time champions showcased their depth and experience to secure a convincing victory.
After recovering from an early wobble with the bat, Australia’s bowlers took complete control of the contest, ensuring South Africa never seriously threatened the target.
Litchfield Shines on Return
Australia’s innings got off to a shaky start as both Georgia Voll and Beth Mooney departed inside the first four overs, leaving the score at 24/2.
However, any concerns were quickly erased by Phoebe Litchfield, who marked her return from injury with a dazzling display of strokeplay. Having missed both warm-up matches due to a quad issue, the left-hander looked in superb touch from the outset.
Litchfield smashed 50 from just 24 deliveries, striking nine boundaries and a six as she put the South African bowlers under immediate pressure.
Her aggressive approach shifted the momentum firmly in Australia’s favour and laid the foundation for a strong total.
Perry and Wareham Add Valuable Contributions
While Litchfield provided the early fireworks, Ellyse Perry played an important supporting role through the middle overs.
The experienced all-rounder compiled a composed 36 from 26 balls, helping stabilize the innings after another brief collapse that included the wicket of Ashleigh Gardner for just one run.
Georgia Wareham then delivered a crucial late contribution, scoring 32 from 22 balls with six boundaries. Annabel Sutherland also chipped in with a brisk 21 from 14 deliveries as Australia continued to score freely in the closing overs.
Despite South Africa regularly taking wickets, Australia’s batting depth ensured the innings never lost momentum and they finished on a competitive 172/8.
For South Africa, Nonkululeko Mlaba was the standout bowler with figures of 2/22, while Ayabonga Khaka and Nadine de Klerk each collected two wickets.
Australia’s Bowlers Dominate the Chase
South Africa needed a strong start but immediately found themselves under pressure when Sophie Molineux struck in the opening over to dismiss Sune Luus.
Captain Laura Wolvaardt attempted to anchor the chase with a fighting 44 from 39 balls, while Nadine de Klerk added 25 from 22 deliveries. However, regular wickets prevented the Proteas from building any significant partnerships.
The decisive blow came from Georgia Wareham, who produced a brilliant spell of leg-spin. Wareham removed De Klerk, Chloe Tryon and Mlaba to finish with outstanding figures of 3/13 from just 2.4 overs.
Sophie Molineux supported her with 2/17, while Alana King claimed 2/26. Ashleigh Gardner also contributed with a wicket as Australia’s varied attack proved too strong.
South Africa Collapse Under Pressure
At 48/2, South Africa still had a platform from which to launch a challenge. However, Australia’s relentless pressure triggered a dramatic collapse.
The Proteas lost seven wickets for only 59 runs as the required rate continued to climb. Marizanne Kapp briefly threatened with a quick 12 from six balls, but Australia’s disciplined bowling and sharp fielding never allowed the chase to gain momentum.
South Africa were eventually bowled out for 107 in 16.4 overs, handing Australia a comfortable 65-run victory.
Statement Made by the Champions
Australia could hardly have asked for a better start to their World Cup campaign.
Phoebe Litchfield’s explosive return strengthened an already formidable batting lineup, while the bowlers once again demonstrated why Australia remain the benchmark in women’s cricket.
Against one of the strongest teams in the competition, the six-time champions delivered a complete performance that sends an early warning to the rest of the field. If this display is any indication, Australia will once again be among the leading contenders for the Women’s T20 World Cup title.
