Durham Women produced a composed and commanding performance to defeat Essex Women by 23 runs in a high-scoring ECB Women’s One-Day Cup 2026 clash at Chester-le-Street. The contest featured shifting momentum and strong contributions from both sides, but Durham proved more effective in crucial moments.

Wilson and Armitage Anchor Durham’s Total

Durham made a steady start, with Emma Marlow laying the foundation through a measured 53 off 73 balls. While the early phase remained controlled, the innings gained significant momentum through a dominant second-wicket partnership between Tahlia Wilson and captain Hollie Armitage.

Wilson led the charge with a career-best 152 off 163 deliveries, striking 15 boundaries and maintaining control of the innings. Armitage supported her with a fluent 81 off 65 balls, including nine fours, as the pair combined for a 163-run stand that shifted the game in Durham’s favour.

Marlow’s dismissal came at 137 in 26.3 overs, while Armitage departed at 300 in 48.6 overs. Wilson carried on until the final over, eventually falling at 311 in 49.6 overs. A brief contribution from Mady Villiers (1* off 1) along with 24 extras helped Durham close at 311/3 in their 50 overs.

    Essex Bowling Highlights

    • Eva Gray: 1/59 (10 overs)
    • Esmae MacGregor: 1 wicket
    • Jodi Grewcock: 1/34 (6 overs)

Sophia Smale (0/68) and Sophie Munro (0/40) struggled to contain the scoring, particularly during the middle overs.

Essex Fight Back but Fall Short

Essex began their chase with positive intent but lost Grace Scrivens for 47 off 80 balls, leaving them at 113 in 24.4 overs. Cordelia Griffith added stability with a 50 off 77 balls, but her dismissal at 121 in 27.5 overs put the pressure back on the batting side.

Alice Macleod (15) and Joanne Gardner (14) were unable to build sustained partnerships, and Essex slipped to 168/4 in 35.6 overs.

The innings was revived by a strong 109-run stand between Jodi Grewcock and Florence Miller. Grewcock scored 77 off 69 balls, including five boundaries, while Miller remained unbeaten on 49 off 37 deliveries. Their partnership brought Essex back into contention, but Grewcock’s dismissal at 277 in 49.1 overs proved decisive.

A late push from Amara Carr (11* off 4) was not enough, as Essex finished on 288/5 in 50 overs, falling 23 runs short.

    Durham Bowlers Hold Their Nerve

Durham’s bowlers maintained discipline across the innings. Mady Villiers led the attack with 1/58 in 10 overs, while Sophia Turner (1/57) and Katherine Fraser (1/27) struck at key moments.

Grace Thompson stood out for her control, conceding 39 runs in 9 overs while picking up a wicket. Katie Levick also contributed with 1/53, ensuring Essex never fully took control of the chase.

    Key Takeaways

    • Tahlia Wilson’s 152 was the defining innings of the match
    • Wilson and Armitage’s 163-run partnership set up the total
    • Essex’s late fightback fell short despite Grewcock and Miller’s stand
    • Durham’s bowlers struck at crucial stages to seal victory

Durham’s execution with both bat and ball, particularly during key phases, ensured a well-earned win in a closely contested encounter.
