Francesca Sweet’s maiden half-century for Hampshire played a decisive role in a rain-affected ECB Women’s One-Day Cup victory over Yorkshire at Clifton Park, as the visitors secured a 16-run win via the DLS method.
Hampshire posted 205 for 7 from 38 overs before restricting Yorkshire to 196 for 8, registering their fifth win in seven matches and strengthening their hold on second place in the standings.
Sweet, McCaughan and Wellington Lead the Way
Sweet struck a well-paced 50 in her third appearance for Hampshire, adding to a strong batting effort led by Ella McCaughan, who top-scored with 51. Amanda-Jade Wellington contributed a valuable unbeaten 41, helping the side accelerate late in the innings.
Yorkshire had earlier reduced Hampshire to 127 for 5 in 29.1 overs before a rain interruption of nearly 90 minutes led to a revised 38-over contest. After the restart, Sweet and Wellington added 78 runs in the final 8.5 overs, with Wellington striking five fours from 27 balls and Sweet finding the boundary regularly during her 57-ball innings.
Jonassen Strikes Early for Yorkshire
Jess Jonassen continued her strong form with the ball, finishing with figures of 3 for 24. Her spell helped reduce Hampshire to 93 for 4 in the 22nd over, including key wickets of Abi Norgrove, Georgia Adams and Naomi Dattani.
Earlier, Rhianna Southby made 31 before falling to Ines Blackwell, while McCaughan was later dismissed by Maddie Ward. Adams was featuring in just her second match of the season after returning from a quad injury.
Hampshire Regain Control in Chase
Yorkshire’s opening pair of Lauren Winfield-Hill and Georgie Boyce provided a solid start, adding 63 runs inside 13 overs. However, Hampshire struck back quickly, with Dattani removing Boyce for 22 and Wellington dismissing Winfield-Hill for 35 within the space of three balls.
Yorkshire slipped to 85 for 4 in the 20th over as Adams accounted for Ami Campbell, while Jonassen was dismissed shortly after. Despite Sterre Kalis contributing 46, the hosts were unable to maintain the required rate.
Late Resistance Falls Short
Hampshire’s bowlers maintained pressure through the middle overs. Bex Tyson picked up two wickets with her left-arm spin, while Dattani added another breakthrough.
A late stand between Beth Langston and Grace Hall added some resistance, but Yorkshire fell short, needing 24 runs from the final over bowled by Adams.
Sweet’s maiden fifty proved to be the key contribution, helping Hampshire secure a crucial victory in challenging conditions.
