Surrey Women edged past Durham Women by two wickets in a low-scoring thriller in the Women’s T20 Vitality Blast 2026 at The Oval, chasing down the target with 20 balls to spare in a match dominated by bowlers.
MacDonald-Gay Produces Record Spell
Ryana MacDonald-Gay delivered a remarkable performance with the ball, returning figures of 6/11 – the best ever recorded in women’s domestic T20 cricket. Playing only her third match after returning from a spinal lumbar injury, she came close to a hat-trick on three separate occasions as Durham were bowled out for 102.
Bethan Miles supported well with 2/10 on her Blast debut, while Bess Heath top-scored for Durham with 28.
Durham had made a steady start, with Emily Windsor and Mady Villiers taking the score to 37/1. However, a run-out triggered a collapse, and MacDonald-Gay capitalised, removing key batters in quick succession.
Despite some resistance from Heath, who struck a six during her innings, Surrey continued to apply pressure, with Miles finishing off the innings.
Durham Fight Back with the Ball
Defending a modest total, Durham made Surrey work hard for the win. Heather Graham led the fightback with 3/19, while Trudy Johnson claimed 2/20.
Surrey’s chase began poorly as Bryony Smith and Alice Davidson-Richards were dismissed early, the latter bowled by Lauren Filer. Kira Chathli also fell during the powerplay, leaving Surrey under pressure.
Spence provided some momentum with an attacking approach, hitting multiple boundaries, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Surrey slipped to 68/6 despite being ahead of the required rate.
Monaghan Holds Nerve in Chase
With the match finely balanced, Alice Monaghan played a crucial role, remaining unbeaten on 20 to guide Surrey to victory. Even after MacDonald-Gay was dismissed with nine runs still required, Monaghan ensured there were no further setbacks.
Surrey eventually reached the target with 20 balls remaining, sealing a hard-fought win.
“I couldn’t imagine something as magical as this would happen and for it to happen here was even more magical,” MacDonald-Gay said. “Having it happen here at the Kia Oval, there is nothing more you could wish for, so it was a brilliant time to do this. This winter I’ve just been hoping to get back to how I was last year and I feel like today has put me in good stead for carrying on in the competition.”
