India Women’s pacer Renuka Singh Thakur has spoken about her recent struggles with the ball and her efforts to rediscover rhythm ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England.
Following a challenging tour of South Africa, the seamer is working on regaining her ability to swing the ball, which remains a key part of her bowling.
Reflecting on Difficult South Africa Tour
India endured a 1-4 defeat in the five-match T20I series, with Renuka finding it difficult to make an impact. She claimed just two wickets in four matches, averaging 64.50 with an economy rate of 9.21.
Renuka acknowledged the challenges she faced during the tour. “I practise every day, but it’s not like I swing the ball every time,” Renuka said. “I struggled a lot with my bowling when I played in South Africa. But now I have a time of 10-15 days to bring my swing back.”
Working to Rediscover Rhythm
The 30-year-old revealed that she has been reviewing her previous performances to identify areas for improvement.
“When you don’t perform well, a lot of things do not work for you. I haven’t been able to swing [the ball] for some time, so I am trying to bring my swing back. I am checking my old videos to see what I used to do and hoping that it comes back,” she said.
Renuka emphasised that swing bowling remains her primary strength and a crucial asset for the team.
“I am working on my swing bowling since it is my strength. It is always beneficial for the team if the ball swings and I can get two to three wickets at the top for the team. I back myself to bowl with the new ball, but since the same movement is not coming through, I am trying to work with the new ball to try and take wickets with it.”
Preparation for Upcoming Assignments
India’s squad is currently undergoing a training camp at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru from May 10 to 16 as part of their preparations.
The team will soon travel to England for a bilateral T20I series before competing in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026, where Renuka will look to return to form and play a key role with the new ball.
