Thailand Women made a strong start to the Asian Games Qualifier 2026 with a commanding 89-run victory over Hong Kong Women in the tournament opener at Bayuemas Oval, Kuala Lumpur on May 26.
Led by skipper Naruemol Chaiwai, Thailand delivered a complete performance with both bat and ball to take early control in Group A.
Thailand Build Massive Total
After winning the toss and opting to bat, Thailand suffered an early setback when Aphisara Suwanchonrathi was dismissed by Kary Chan in the third over.
However, Natthakan Chantham and Nannapat Koncharoenkai steadied the innings before accelerating brilliantly. The duo added a massive 157-run partnership for the second wicket, completely shifting the momentum.
Chantham was the standout performer, smashing an unbeaten 98 off 65 balls, narrowly missing out on a well-deserved century. At the other end, Koncharoenkai played a composed knock of 51* off 55 balls as Thailand posted an imposing 170/1 in 20 overs.
For Hong Kong, Kary Chan was the only wicket-taker, finishing with 1/22, while Maryam Bibi and Alison Siu bowled tidy spells without breakthroughs.
Hong Kong Struggle in Chase
Chasing 171, Hong Kong never managed to keep up with the required run rate. Natasha Miles fell early, and despite efforts from Shanzeen Shahzad (21) and Shing Chan (15), the innings lacked momentum.
Thailand’s disciplined bowling ensured constant pressure, with regular wickets halting any chances of a recovery. Hong Kong were eventually restricted to 81/7 in their 20 overs, falling well short of the target.
A late unbeaten stand between Alison Siu (6*) and Hiu Ying Cheung (11*) was the highest partnership of the innings, highlighting the struggles of the top and middle order.
Thailand Bowlers Seal the Win
Thailand’s bowlers shared the workload effectively, with Onnicha Kamchomphu and Sunida Chaturongrattana picking up two wickets each. Thipatcha Putthawong and Suleeporn Laomi also chipped in with a wicket apiece.
Their tight lines and control limited Hong Kong to just 81, while conceding only eight extras compared to Hong Kong’s 18.
Chantham was rightly named Player of the Match for her match-winning unbeaten 98, which laid the foundation for Thailand’s dominant victory.
