Italy Women began their ICC Women’s T20I Challenge Trophy 2026 campaign with a composed 16-run victory (DLS method) over Rwanda in a rain-affected match at the Gahanga International Cricket Stadium in Kigali.
In a game shortened by interruptions, Italy posted 72 for 1 in 11 overs before restricting Rwanda to 50 for 4 in a revised seven-over chase. A balanced effort with bat and ball ensured a strong start for the Italian side.
Kontopirakis Anchors Italy’s Innings
Italy’s innings was built around a steady and controlled knock from Alexia Kontopirakis, who remained unbeaten on 45 off 37 deliveries. She paced her innings effectively in the shortened format, striking four boundaries and a six while maintaining stability at the crease.
The innings began cautiously, with Kumudu Peddrick scoring 6 off 11 balls before being dismissed by Ruth Uwimana. From there, Kontopirakis took charge, forming a crucial partnership with Ilenia Sims.
Sims provided solid support with an unbeaten 14 off 18 balls, as the pair ensured Italy maintained control through the middle overs to finish on a competitive 72 for 1.
Uwimana was the only wicket-taker for Rwanda, conceding 12 runs in her two overs, while Rosine Irera and Rosette Shimwamana kept things tight without breakthroughs.
Early Strikes Derail Rwanda Chase
Chasing a revised target of 67 in seven overs, Rwanda’s pursuit faltered almost immediately. Italy’s bowlers struck twice in the opening over, putting the hosts under pressure from the outset.
Alice Ikuzwe (10) and Clarisse Uwase (11) attempted to rebuild, but the required rate and lack of acceleration made recovery difficult.
Sims and Fernando Lead Bowling Effort
Italy maintained control throughout the chase with disciplined bowling. Ilenia Sims followed up her batting contribution with two wickets for 11 runs, while Thilini Fernando also claimed two wickets, striking early to dent Rwanda’s hopes.
Despite a late unbeaten 12 from Merveille Uwase, Rwanda finished on 50 for 4, falling short in the reduced chase.
Italy Start Campaign on High
Italy’s victory was shaped by a complete performance—Kontopirakis’ composed innings, support from Sims, and a clinical bowling display that applied pressure consistently.
For Rwanda, early wickets and the mounting required rate proved decisive, highlighting the difficulty of chasing in shortened formats after a slow start.
Italy now move forward with confidence, while Rwanda will aim to regroup and improve in the matches ahead.
