Durham climbed off the bottom of the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup table after a dominant 120-run victory over Somerset, driven by a six-wicket haul from Katie Levick.
After posting 292 for 8, built on half-centuries from Hollie Armitage, Bess Heath and Mia Rogers, Durham bowled Somerset out for 172, with Niamh Holland’s 67 proving the only significant resistance.
Match Summary:
- Durham: 292 for 8 (Armitage 58, Rogers 56, Heath 51)
- Somerset: 172 (Holland 67; Levick 6-37)
- Result: Durham won by 120 runs
Durham elected to bat first after winning the toss but made a shaky start, losing stand-in opener Katherine Fraser in the opening over to Alex Griffiths. Armitage and Tahlia Wilson steadied the innings through the powerplay, though Wilson was dismissed shortly after, bowled by Holland.
A developing partnership between Armitage and Mady Villiers was broken when Villiers edged Chloe Skelton behind. Armitage continued her form, bringing up her third half-century of the season, but wickets kept falling as Emily Windsor was caught at cover off Lola Harris before Armitage herself departed, chipping to midwicket to leave Durham at 164 for 5.
The innings was revived by Mia Rogers and Bess Heath, who injected momentum in the latter stages. Heath struck the first six of the match and reached her second fifty of the campaign from just 33 balls. Rogers complemented her with inventive strokeplay, including reverse sweeps and ramps, and went on to record her third List A fifty. Despite Heath’s dismissal in the deep, Rogers carried on to help Durham reach a competitive 292.
Somerset’s reply got off to a difficult start when Bex Odgers chipped Trudy Johnson to point, where Rogers took a diving one-handed catch. Levick then removed Anika Learoyd, tightening Durham’s grip early in the innings.
Sophie Luff and Niamh Holland attempted to rebuild, with Luff contributing before being stumped off Fraser. Holland remained composed, bringing up a half-century, but Somerset’s chase unraveled as Levick struck twice in quick succession, dismissing Jess Hazell and trapping Katie Jones lbw.
Holland’s resistance ended on 67 when a leading edge off Villiers was caught at backward point, leaving Somerset in deep trouble. Chloe Skelton was bowled by Johnson, and Levick continued her impact by removing Griffiths as Durham closed in on victory.
Levick completed her outstanding spell by dismissing Bea Willis and Lola Harris, finishing with figures of 6 for 37 to seal a comprehensive win and lift Durham off the bottom of the standings.
