Somerset Women delivered a dominant all-round display to defeat Surrey Women by 136 runs in a high-scoring clash in the ECB Women’s One Day Cup 2026, highlighted by Heather Knight’s superb century and a strong collective bowling effort.
Knight and Luff Lay the Platform
After opting to bat first, Somerset made a steady but cautious start, losing early wickets that briefly checked their progress. Rebecca Odgers was dismissed for 10 (15), caught by Corteen-Coleman off Brown, while Niamh Holland added a quick 14 off 10 before Somerset slipped to 27 for 2.
The innings was then rebuilt through a key partnership between Heather Knight and Sophie Luff. The pair stabilised the situation before accelerating, putting together a significant stand that shifted momentum firmly in Somerset’s favour.
Knight anchored the innings with a composed 103 from 107 balls, striking nine boundaries, while Luff contributed a fluent 57 off 63 deliveries. Their partnership took Somerset beyond 150 before Luff fell at 167 for 3 in the 28.4 overs.
Late Acceleration Lifts Somerset to 337
Somerset maintained their intensity even after the departure of the set batters. Dani Gibson provided a powerful finish with a rapid 77 off 37 balls, hitting 11 fours and two sixes at a strike rate of 208.10.
Charlie Dean added 25 from 23 balls, while Jess Hazell remained unbeaten on 18, ensuring Somerset posted a formidable total of 337 for 9 from their 50 overs.
For Surrey, Maitlan Brown was the standout bowler with four wickets, while Danielle Gregory picked up three. Alice Capsey and others also contributed with breakthroughs, though the scoring rate proved difficult to contain.
Surrey Fall Short in Chase
Chasing 338, Surrey suffered an early blow when Bryony Smith was dismissed for a duck by Alex Griffiths in the third ball of the innings.
Paige Scholfield (20 off 15) and Alice Capsey attempted to rebuild, but wickets continued to fall at regular intervals. Capsey played a fighting innings of 59 off 58 balls, including nine boundaries, providing some resistance.
Alice Davidson-Richards (48 off 37) and Danni Wyatt-Hodge (38 off 33) added a valuable partnership to take Surrey past 100, but the increasing run rate and consistent pressure from Somerset’s bowlers made the task difficult.
Lower-order contributions proved insufficient, with Kira Chathli (10), Kalea Moore (6), and others unable to build momentum as Surrey slipped from 159 for 5 and continued to lose wickets.
Somerset Bowlers Seal Comprehensive Win
Somerset’s bowlers maintained control throughout the chase. Charlie Dean led the attack with 3 for 22 in 7.2 overs, while Chloe Skelton and Lola Harris claimed two wickets each. Alex Griffiths and Niamh Holland also picked up one wicket apiece.
Their disciplined effort ensured Surrey were bowled out for 201 in 33.2 overs, securing a comprehensive 136-run victory for Somerset.
