Australia Women continued their strong start to the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 with a nine-wicket victory over Bangladesh at Headingley. After restricting Bangladesh to just 77/8, Australia chased down the target in only 9.5 overs to secure another major net run-rate boost.
It was a complete performance from the six-time champions, with Kim Garth, Sophie Molineux and Ellyse Perry setting the tone with the ball before Georgia Voll finished the job with a confident unbeaten 45.
Australia’s Bowlers Dominate Early
Bangladesh were put under pressure almost immediately after being asked to bat in helpful seam-bowling conditions.
Kim Garth made early use of the movement on offer, striking twice in the powerplay. Dilara Akter was dismissed while attempting to hit across the line, before Juairiya Ferdous fell to a delivery that straightened and beat her attempted leg-side shot.
Sophie Molineux then continued her excellent tournament start by trapping Sharmin Akhter lbw, leaving Bangladesh in deep trouble.
The pressure intensified when Ellyse Perry entered the attack. Perry, who has been used less frequently with the ball in recent T20Is, reminded everyone of her value by taking two wickets in her opening over. Sobhana Mostary was caught sharply by Molineux at short cover, before Shorna Akter was pinned lbw.
At 27/5 in the eighth over, Bangladesh were already struggling to stay in the contest.
Nigar Sultana Offers Resistance
Bangladesh captain Nigar Sultana fought hard to prevent a complete collapse.
She top-scored with 27 from 47 deliveries and combined with Ritu Moni in a 32-run stand that helped Bangladesh avoid being bowled out cheaply. However, the pair could not apply any real scoring pressure on Australia.
Bangladesh managed only six boundaries across their entire innings and finished on 77/8 from 20 overs.
Garth, Molineux and Perry all claimed two wickets each, while Australia’s varied attack kept Bangladesh tied down from start to finish.
Voll Finishes Chase in Style
Australia’s chase was never in doubt.
Georgia Voll, looking to bounce back after a duck against South Africa, took a few balls to settle before finding her rhythm. Once set, she attacked confidently and peppered the boundary with powerful strokes.
Her first boundary came as a six down the ground off Marufa Akter, and she continued to dominate from there. Voll finished unbeaten on 45 from 32 balls, hitting six fours and a six.
Beth Mooney was the only Australian wicket to fall, caught brilliantly by Ritu Moni at mid-off to give Marufa a deserved breakthrough.
Australia reached 78/1 with more than ten overs to spare, underlining the gulf between the two sides on the day.
Australia Strengthen Semi-Final Push
The win gives Australia another important net run-rate boost and strengthens their position in the race for the semi-finals.
Even with injury concerns around Phoebe Litchfield and Ashleigh Gardner, Australia showed the depth and flexibility that makes them one of the tournament favourites. Their bowling attack shared responsibility effectively, while Voll’s innings added another positive sign for the batting unit.
For Bangladesh, the result was a difficult reminder of the challenge of facing elite opposition. Captain Nigar Sultana admitted afterwards that her side was capable of better, and they will need a stronger batting response in their remaining matches.
Australia, meanwhile, continue to look every bit like a team determined to reclaim the World Cup crown.
