Priyanaz Chatterji produced a match-winning performance to steer Surrey to a thrilling three-wicket victory over Essex Women at the Kia Oval, halting the visitors’ winning run in the competition.
Chasing 228, Surrey looked in deep trouble at 150 for 7 despite a solid 49 from Alice Monaghan. However, Chatterji held her nerve with an unbeaten 37, forging a crucial 79-run eighth-wicket partnership with Aylish Cranstone, who contributed 31 not out. The pair guided Surrey home with 47 balls to spare.
Essex Rebuild After Early Collapse
Earlier, Essex recovered from a shaky start to post 227 all out. They were reduced to 39 for 3 before Ariana Dowse (69) and Flo Miller (74*) rebuilt the innings with composed half-centuries.
Chatterji also played her part with the ball, picking up 2 for 37, while Dani Gregory led Surrey’s bowling effort with 3 for 51.
Surrey had struck early through Maitlan Brown, who dismissed Essex captain Grace Scrivens with the first ball of the match. However, a dropped chance allowed Dowse to settle and build a key partnership with Miller, who later anchored the innings as wickets fell around her.
Dramatic Turnaround in the Chase
Surrey’s reply began positively, but Essex clawed back into the contest through disciplined bowling. Sophia Smale (2 for 35) and Kate Coppack applied pressure as wickets fell regularly.
The turning point came after the dismissal of Monaghan just short of her half-century, leaving Surrey in a precarious position. With the required rate climbing, Chatterji and Cranstone initially rebuilt cautiously before accelerating at the right moment.
A missed caught-and-bowled chance proved costly for Essex, as Chatterji capitalised and guided Surrey to an unlikely victory.
Surrey Snatch Victory
From a near-certain defeat, Surrey produced a remarkable turnaround, with Chatterji’s composure under pressure proving decisive. The win not only halted Essex’s momentum but also showcased Surrey’s resilience in high-pressure situations.
