Manchester Super Giants kept their hopes of reaching the Women’s Hundred knockout stage alive with a disciplined 27-run victory over Southern Brave at Southampton.
After posting 139 for 4, the visitors produced an outstanding display in the field and with the ball to restrict Southern Brave to 112 for 6. India wicketkeeper-batter Richa Ghosh starred with her maiden half-century in the competition, while Mady Villiers claimed outstanding figures of 3 for 17.
The victory means Manchester Super Giants will qualify for the Eliminator if they defeat Sunrisers Leeds in their final league match.
Richa Ghosh Delivers Maiden Fifty
Manchester Super Giants posted a competitive total on a pitch that increasingly assisted the spinners.
Smriti Mandhana provided another solid contribution with 46, but it was Ghosh, promoted to No. 3, who stole the spotlight.
The Indian wicketkeeper-batter scored her maiden Women’s Hundred half-century, helping the visitors recover after early setbacks and guiding them to 139 for 4.
Mandhana and Ghosh together contributed exactly 100 runs, laying the foundation for a defendable total.
Southern Brave’s best bowler was Issy Wong, who finished with figures of 2 for 24 after dismissing both Indian batters in quick succession.
Brave Make Positive Start
Chasing 140, Southern Brave began confidently through Lizelle Lee and Maia Bouchier. The opening pair added 36 runs during the powerplay and appeared well placed to launch an assault during the middle phase.
However, the momentum shifted dramatically once both openers departed.
Lee fell after a superb boundary catch by Villiers, while Bouchier was run out at the non-striker’s end.
Those two wickets transformed the contest.
Villiers Leads Spin Masterclass
Manchester’s spinners completely controlled the middle overs. Villiers, Sophie Ecclestone and Bex Tyson bowled with excellent discipline, making scoring increasingly difficult.
Villiers produced the decisive spell.
She first dismissed Southern Brave captain Sophie Molineux via a marginal stumping completed by Ghosh before removing the dangerous Laura Wolvaardt, who made 36 from 28 balls.
Villiers then picked up her third wicket when Charli Knott top-edged a catch to Grace Ballinger.
Her figures of 3 for 17 from 20 balls proved to be the match-winning performance.
Brave Fail to Finish Strong
By the time Villiers completed her spell, Southern Brave required a significant late surge.
Instead, Manchester Super Giants maintained their intensity in the field.
The Brave failed to hit a single boundary during the final 36 balls of the chase as the visitors closed out an impressive victory. Their sharp fielding and disciplined bowling ensured the required rate climbed steadily throughout the innings.
Southern Brave eventually finished on 112 for 6, falling 27 runs short.
Knockout Race Remains Open
The result gives Manchester Super Giants complete control over their qualification hopes. Victory against Sunrisers Leeds in their final group-stage match will secure a place in the Eliminator.
Southern Brave, meanwhile, suffered their first home defeat in eight Women’s Hundred matches.
They must now beat Trent Rockets in their final league fixture to guarantee progression to the knockout stage.
Villiers Praises Team Execution
Villiers was named Meerkat Match Hero after her outstanding all-round contribution in the field.
“It’s a tough place to come here as an away player and we knew that we’d have to play very well to win here and we’ve done just that,” she said.
The off-spinner revealed the bowlers adjusted quickly after receiving feedback from the batters.
“When our batters came off, they told us bowlers that length was key, so we knew that if we held our lengths, there was a bit in it for the spin and they would have to manufacture stuff. All three of us spinners played a part today, which was great.”
She also explained her attacking mindset.
“I like to attack as a bowler, especially if you’ve got bigger boundaries, you can set a field and run teams ragged. We had a clear plan today and fortunately it worked very well for us.”
With Richa Ghosh finally registering her first Women’s Hundred half-century and the bowling unit delivering under pressure, Manchester Super Giants head into the final round of league matches with qualification firmly within their grasp.
