South Africa, led by Laura Wolvaardt, began their five-match T20I series against Harmanpreet Kaur’s India with a six-wicket win at Kingsmead, Durban on April 17, 2026. The contest forms part of a broader white-ball tour running from April 17 to 27, serving as key preparation ahead of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 in England and Wales.

After winning the toss, Wolvaardt opted to field first, while India handed a T20I debut to 22-year-old all-rounder Kashvee Gautam.

India Build Competitive Total Through Top Order

India’s innings started positively with Shafali Verma and Smriti Mandhana putting together a 46-run opening partnership. Shafali set the tone with 34 off 20 balls before Tumi Sekhukhune provided the breakthrough.

Ayabonga Khaka followed up by removing Smriti Mandhana (13 off 14 balls) on the penultimate ball of the powerplay. During her innings, Mandhana surpassed Rohit Sharma’s tally of 4,231 runs to become India’s leading run-scorer in T20Is.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Harmanpreet Kaur then rebuilt the innings with a 71-run stand for the third wicket, the highest partnership for India against South Africa in T20Is on South African soil. Rodrigues scored 36 off 29 balls before Sekhukhune returned to break the partnership in the 15th over.

Harmanpreet remained unbeaten on 47 off 33 balls but lacked support in the latter stages as wickets fell regularly. A brief contribution of 10 off 8 balls from debutant Kashvee Gautam helped India reach 157 for 7 in 20 overs. The innings also included 7 extras.

Khaka led the bowling effort with 3 for 16 in four overs, supported by Sekhukhune (2 for 27) and Nonkululeko Mlaba (1 for 30), who kept India in check during the closing overs.

    Wolvaardt Anchors Successful Chase

In response, South Africa made a brisk start through Sune Luus, who scored 13 off 7 balls before being dismissed by Shreyanka Patil in the second over.

Wolvaardt then took control of the chase, building a 48-run partnership with Tazmin Brits (10 off 13 balls) and a crucial 52-run stand with Annerie Dercksen. Her 51 off 39 balls provided stability and direction during the middle overs.

India found a way back when Patil dismissed Wolvaardt in the 14th over, but South Africa remained composed in the closing stages.

Annerie Dercksen stayed unbeaten on 44 off 34 balls, while Chloe Tryon added 18 not out from 16 deliveries. The pair shared an unbroken 29-run partnership for the fifth wicket to guide South Africa to the target with five balls remaining. Tryon sealed the result with a six in the final over.

    South Africa Take Early Lead

South Africa completed the chase to secure a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. For India, Shreyanka Patil (2 for 26) and Shree Charani (1 for 26) were the most effective bowlers, while Arundhati Reddy also contributed with a wicket.

Ayabonga Khaka was named Player of the Match for her impactful spell that played a key role in restricting India’s total.
