The T20 Blast is England and Wales’ leading domestic Twenty20 cricket competition. Established in 2003 as the Twenty20 Cup, it was the world’s first professional domestic T20 tournament and helped popularise the format before the introduction of leagues such as the Indian Premier League and Big Bash League.
Now known as the Vitality Blast, the men’s competition features 18 county teams. A separate women’s tournament was introduced in 2025, expanding opportunities for players in the domestic game.
Northamptonshire Steelbacks won the men’s title in 2026, while The Blaze claimed the women’s championship with a 10-wicket victory over Durham.
What Is the T20 Blast?
The T20 Blast is organised by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and follows the Twenty20 format, with each team permitted a maximum of 20 overs per innings.
The competition combines aggressive batting, varied bowling tactics and fast-paced matches with England’s traditional county cricket structure.
The men’s tournament features 18 first-class counties, including Somerset, Surrey, Hampshire, Lancashire and Nottinghamshire. Matches take place during the English summer, with the leading teams advancing to the knockout stages and Finals Day.
Since its launch, the competition has operated under several names:
- Twenty20 Cup
- Friends Provident T20
- Friends Life T20
- NatWest T20 Blast
- Vitality Blast
Despite changes in sponsorship and tournament structure, the competition remains an important platform for county players and overseas professionals.
History of the T20 Blast
The ECB launched the Twenty20 Cup in 2003 to attract spectators and introduce a shorter, more accessible version of county cricket.
Surrey became the inaugural champions after defeating Warwickshire in the final.
The tournament quickly established itself in the domestic calendar. Leicestershire won titles in 2004 and 2006, while counties including Somerset, Kent, Middlesex and Sussex also enjoyed success during its early years.
As T20 cricket gained popularity internationally, counties increasingly recruited overseas players, bringing established international cricketers into the competition.
The tournament adopted the NatWest T20 Blast name in 2014 before Vitality became its title sponsor in 2018.
More recently, Gloucestershire claimed their first championship in 2024, Somerset won in 2025, and Northamptonshire secured their third title in 2026.
Women’s county cricket gained its own Vitality Blast competition in 2025. Surrey won the inaugural championship, followed by The Blaze in 2026.
T20 Blast Teams
The men’s Vitality Blast features 18 county teams from England and Wales.
Under the 2026 format, the counties are divided into three groups of six, with regional rivalries remaining an important part of the schedule.
The participating counties are:
| County team | County team |
|---|---|
| Derbyshire Falcons | Durham |
| Essex | Glamorgan |
| Gloucestershire | Hampshire Hawks |
| Kent Spitfires | Lancashire Lightning |
| Leicestershire Foxes | Middlesex |
| Northamptonshire Steelbacks | Nottinghamshire Outlaws |
| Somerset | Surrey |
| Sussex Sharks | Warwickshire Bears |
| Worcestershire Rapids | Yorkshire Vikings |
Each county competes for qualification to the knockout rounds, with the eventual champion determined at Finals Day.
Women’s Vitality Blast Teams
The women’s Vitality Blast began in 2025 as part of the development of women’s domestic county cricket.
Its top tier expanded to nine teams in 2026 following Yorkshire’s inclusion. A separate League Two provides additional competitive opportunities.

The women’s competition has its own standings and Finals Day, separate from the men’s tournament.
T20 Blast Format Explained
The men’s T20 Blast features a group stage, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final.
For 2026, the ECB introduced a three-group structure involving six counties in each group.
Every team plays 12 group-stage matches:
- Five home matches against group opponents
- Five away matches against group opponents
- Two additional fixtures against teams from other groups
This gives each county six home and six away matches.
The top two teams from each group qualify automatically for the quarter-finals. The two best third-placed teams also progress, completing the eight-team knockout lineup.
The four quarter-final winners advance to Finals Day, where the semi-finals and final decide the champion.
The women’s top-tier competition follows a different structure, with nine teams competing in a group stage before a four-team Finals Day.
Most Successful Teams in T20 Blast History
Several counties have won multiple men’s T20 Blast championships since the competition began in 2003.
Through the 2026 season, four teams share the record for the most titles, with three each.
| Team | Titles |
|---|---|
| Leicestershire Foxes | 3 |
| Hampshire | 3 |
| Somerset | 3 |
| Northamptonshire Steelbacks | 3 |
| Kent Spitfires | 2 |
| Nottinghamshire Outlaws | 2 |
Northamptonshire joined the leading group by winning the 2026 championship.
The spread of titles reflects the competition’s competitive nature, with success requiring consistent group-stage performances followed by victories in knockout matches.

Why the T20 Blast Matters in English Cricket
The T20 Blast has played an important role in the development of professional Twenty20 cricket since 2003.
Its county-based structure allows emerging players to compete alongside experienced domestic and international cricketers, while Finals Day remains a major event in the English summer.
The addition of the women’s Vitality Blast has extended that platform to the women’s game.
More than two decades after its launch, the competition continues to combine county rivalries, short-format cricket and opportunities for players to perform at a high level.
