Somerset Women pulled off a dramatic one-wicket victory over Yorkshire Women in a thrilling ECB Women’s One-Day Cup 2026 clash at Taunton, chasing down the target with 24 balls remaining after a tense contest that swung throughout.

Yorkshire, asked to bat first, made a cautious start but lost an early wicket when Blackwell was dismissed at 27/1 in 5.5 overs. Lauren Winfield-Hill provided stability at the top with a composed 36 off 41 balls, sharing a brief partnership with Jess Jonassen. However, wickets continued to fall at regular intervals, with Jonassen departing at 64/2 (12.6 overs) and Winfield-Hill soon after at 68/3 (13.3 overs). Sterre Kalis followed shortly at 74/4, leaving Yorkshire under pressure.

Late Contributions Lift Yorkshire to 178

Maddie Ward (19 off 16) and Ami Campbell (12 off 18) attempted to rebuild during the middle overs, but Somerset’s bowlers maintained control. Erin Thomas contributed a steady 24 off 38 balls, forming an important partnership with Rachel Slater, who remained unbeaten on 26 off 23. Their efforts, along with a useful 13 from Claudie Cooper, pushed Yorkshire to 178 in 33.5 overs, with 15 extras added.

Somerset’s bowling was led by Alex Griffiths, who returned 4 for 22 in 8.5 overs, breaking through the middle and lower order. Chloe Skelton also claimed 4 wickets, conceding 42 runs in her 10 overs. Niamh Holland (1/46) and Lola Harris (1/36) provided support, while Ellie Anderson delivered an economical spell.

    Luff Anchors Chase Under Pressure

Somerset’s reply began shakily as Niamh Holland was dismissed at 5/1 in 1.3 overs. Rebecca Odgers steadied the innings with 31 off 37 balls, sharing a brief stand with Heather Knight (5) before the latter fell at 23/2. Odgers continued to anchor the innings until her dismissal at 62/3 in 12.3 overs, bringing Sophie Luff to the crease.

Luff’s unbeaten 76 off 101 balls proved decisive, as she anchored the chase through multiple setbacks. Despite her presence, Somerset lost wickets regularly, with Dani Gibson (6), Jess Hazell (18), and Alex Griffiths (1) falling in quick succession, reducing the side to 101/6.

    Lower Order Holds Nerve

Further setbacks saw Chloe Skelton and Ellie Anderson depart cheaply, leaving Somerset in trouble at 115/8. However, Lola Harris provided crucial support with a determined 18 off 55 balls, forming a key lower-order partnership with Luff to revive the chase.

The match reached a tense climax when Harris was dismissed at 170/9 in 44.2 overs, leaving Somerset just short of the target with one wicket remaining. Olivia Barnes then joined Luff, and the pair calmly guided Somerset to 179/9 in 46 overs, sealing a memorable one-wicket win.

    Yorkshire Fall Just Short

Yorkshire’s bowlers produced a strong effort but were unable to take the final wicket. Claudie Cooper led the attack with figures of 3 for 28 in 9 overs, while Jess Jonassen and Rachel Slater picked up two wickets each. Despite maintaining pressure throughout, they could not prevent Somerset from completing the chase.

    Key Highlights

    • Somerset chased 179 to win by one wicket
    • Sophie Luff scored 76* off 101 balls
    • Alex Griffiths took 4/22 for Somerset
    • Chloe Skelton also claimed 4 wickets
    • Yorkshire posted 178 in 33.5 overs

Somerset’s resilience, led by Luff’s composed innings and key lower-order partnerships, proved decisive in a closely fought contest.
