England captain Nat Sciver-Brunt remains determined to resume bowling despite the calf injury that has restricted her to a specialist batting role throughout the summer.

The all-rounder has also suggested that she could miss England’s three-match ODI series against Ireland in early September as she continues a carefully managed rehabilitation programme.

Sciver-Brunt has not bowled competitively since sustaining the injury in April, but she insists she is not ready to give up that part of her game.

Calf Injury Continues to Require Careful Management

Sciver-Brunt has dealt with the calf problem for much of the season. She missed England’s white-ball series against New Zealand and India in May and was also unavailable for three group-stage matches during the 2026 T20 World Cup.

The England captain then took a brief break following the Test defeat to India at Lord’s during the opening week of The Hundred.

She returned for Trent Rockets against Welsh Fire in Cardiff and scored an unbeaten 37 from 23 balls to guide her team to an eight-wicket victory.

After the match, Sciver-Brunt said the calf felt “good”, although she continues to follow an extensive daily management plan.

“It hasn’t really stopped since the World Cup,” she said. “[I’m doing] just little things, ticking over in the day and making sure my conditioning and strength is still up there. There’s plenty to do.”

    Hundred Role Limited to Batting

Sciver-Brunt is unlikely to feature in all five of Trent Rockets’ remaining matches, particularly with the team facing a demanding schedule that includes two more games this week.

She will also play only as a batter for the remainder of The Hundred.

“I haven’t bowled in quite a long time,” she said. “I’ll have to leave the bowling for now, sadly.”

Although she has been unable to contribute with the ball since April, Sciver-Brunt is working closely with England’s sports science and medical staff on a structured return plan.

A significant rehabilitation block is planned after The Hundred, which could affect her availability for the Ireland series.

    Sciver-Brunt Still Wants All-Round Role

Despite the prolonged setback, Sciver-Brunt made it clear that she still wants to contribute in all three disciplines.

“I do still want to bowl. I enjoy being part of the game in all three skills,” she said. “That is the plan. I’ll have quite a big block of rehab after this tournament just to get my body right and make sure that the calf injury doesn’t stick around for longer than necessary.

“We’re working with the sports science and medicine team to put together a plan as to how to keep fit and really be able to contribute to any team I’m in. I still have the drive, and still love playing cricket and enjoying myself out there. I don’t want to give up the bowling just yet.”

Her comments underline that the current specialist batting role is viewed as temporary rather than a permanent change.

    Ireland Series Participation Remains Uncertain

Sciver-Brunt has not yet made a final decision regarding the ODI series against Ireland. When asked directly about her availability, she said further discussions would take place after The Hundred.

“I need to catch up with the sports science and medicine team, and Lottie [Charlotte Edwards, England’s head coach] as well, post this tournament. I’ll see how I am, see how my body is, and we’ll go from there.”

England’s selectors could use the series to assess new players and refresh the squad ahead of next year’s Champions Trophy.

    Opportunity for Emerging England Players

Sciver-Brunt believes the Ireland ODIs could offer domestic players a valuable chance to push for international selection.

“We’re in the first year or so since the 50-over World Cup, so [those ODIs] could be a great chance for different people to step up,” she said. “We’ve got some really talented batters in the domestic game and in the Hundred, so it’d be really cool to see some new faces.”

She also highlighted the increased competitiveness of The Hundred following the introduction of a fourth overseas player in each team.

“This year, there’s four overseas [players per team] so I guess that leaves out a space for a domestic player. But it does mean that the best domestic players will be playing and getting chances to show us what they’ve got… The fourth overseas has made this competition really competitive throughout the teams.”

Home Life Influenced Trent Rockets Decision

Sciver-Brunt received interest from other franchises before deciding to remain with Trent Rockets. The opportunity to stay at home in Nottingham during the competition played a major role in her decision.

She became a mother last year and is also experiencing the unusual situation of being coached by her wife, Katherine Sciver-Brunt, who has joined Chris Read’s staff as an assistant coach.

“It’s part of the reason why I love playing for the Rockets. It’s obviously been a huge change for Katherine and I. Staying at home is a luxury that we don’t tend to get that often, really, in the cricket season – which is all year round. It is really important to us, and spending time with Theo [their son] is hugely important, too.”

Sciver-Brunt also praised Katherine’s influence within the coaching group.

“It’s been really good,” she said. “She obviously has such experience and knowledge about the game, but the best part is she’s experienced it too, so she knows how it feels when you’re out there and you’re under the pump in different situations. She’s passing on as much knowledge as people want and is really enjoying herself.”

For now, Sciver-Brunt’s immediate focus remains on contributing with the bat for Trent Rockets while ensuring her calf recovers fully enough for her to resume her all-round role.
