South Africa have opted for a blend of seasoned campaigners and emerging talent in their squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of New Zealand, with 36-year-old all-rounder Marizanne Kapp unavailable as she continues her rehabilitation. Her absence opens the door for 20-year-old Kayla Reyneke to receive her maiden ODI call-up, while Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, and Dané van Niekerk return to the fold.
A key figure in the Proteas setup for years, Kapp will miss the five T20Is and three ODIs after falling ill during the third T20I against Pakistan last month. She was subsequently unavailable for the ODI leg of that series and has now entered a “return-to-play protocol” aimed at regaining full fitness ahead of upcoming assignments. Despite the void left by her absence, captain Laura Wolvaardt will lead a 15-player squad determined to deliver in this ICC Women’s Championship contest.
Reyneke Earns ODI Opportunity After Impressive Debut
Off-spin bowling all-rounder Kayla Reyneke steps up following a standout introduction to international cricket against Pakistan. On her T20I debut, the 20-year-old returned figures of 2 for 13 from four overs before striking an unbeaten 29 off 16 deliveries at a strike rate of 181.25 to guide South Africa to victory in the opening match, performances that secured her the Player of the Match award.
Across the series, Reyneke collected three wickets at an average of 9.66 and maintained an economy rate of 4.83 in her two bowling outings. Her selection reflects South Africa’s intent to strengthen their all-round resources heading into a demanding overseas tour.
Experienced Trio Bolster Bowling Attack
South Africa’s attack is further reinforced by the return of Ayabonga Khaka, Masabata Klaas, and Dané van Niekerk, all of whom missed the ODI series against Pakistan. Their inclusion adds depth and experience as the Proteas prepare for varied conditions across New Zealand.
Head coach Mandla Mashimbyi highlighted the challenges awaiting his side: “Touring New Zealand always presents unique challenges. The conditions require adaptability, especially when playing across multiple venues where the surfaces and weather can differ. We must adjust quickly, apply ourselves and maintain the standards we have set as a team.”
Tour Schedule and Context
The Amelia Kerr-led White Ferns will host South Africa from 15 March to 4 April 2026 in a white-ball series spanning nearly three weeks. The tour begins with five women’s T20Is, staged as double-headers alongside the men’s fixtures, between March 15 and 25 in Mount Maunganui, Hamilton, Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.
The three-match ODI series will follow, with fixtures scheduled for March 29 in Christchurch and April 1 and 4 in Wellington.
Mashimbyi also underlined the broader significance of the assignment, stating: “This tour gives us another valuable opportunity to test our combinations, deepen our squad and continue evolving our brand of cricket against quality opposition.”
With Kapp focused on her recovery and under-19 captain Kayla Reyneke now integrated into the senior setup, South Africa head to New Zealand aiming to make an impact across both formats.
